I am considering dropping Stats for Bio for Stats has nothing to do with my intended major (Biology major) but to this point I have never had an advanced math class while I have had 3 Advanced Science classes (AP Physics Honors Bio and Honors Chem). Would colleges prefer to see me challenge myself with a subject that is not my strongest (math) or should I go with bio since it is what I intend to major in.
Just give me your thoughts on the subject and I would be very grateful.
Quick disclaimer: I haven’t taken statistics.
It’s a hard question. As far as I know, for math colleges usually just want to see that their students are prepared for Calculus, because that tends to be difficult for many people.
I hadn’t taken an advanced math class until a few months ago, and I found it to be a completely different experience from my regular HS math classes in that it required more rigorous answers to questions involving changing an equation into a certain format to show that it fits a certain theorem, and then going through the theorem’s process. While that may not be difficult after a bit of practice, it was a bit of a shock to find out that I couldn’t just logically answer a question and get away with it.
I say consider how different it will be from the math classes you’ve taken so far. Ask some classmates and find out what their experience was like, and if they adjusted easily to it. If they say that it’s severely different and at least a bit difficult, I think it’s worth it to switch to avoid that sudden change in college. If not, it’s still worth considering it, but aside from making colleges happy, it shouldn’t present much incentive.
