Should I even apply?

So anyways, I was listening to a Columbia rep. from my region speak today at my school and um I basically had the unluckiest thing happen to me. I got a new phone a couple days ago and I have no clue how to turn it off, so it kept ringing due to text messages. I tried to turn it off but I do not know how. The rep. got mad at me and I apologized but the rep. still seemed angry after I apologized. The rep. knows my name because I introduced myself. I am applying to Columbia early decision and I have decent stats for Columbia, but I am wondering if I should even still apply with this incident?

The only thing that might save me is that the rep. at my school does not make the final call with admissions. Its someone else. However, the rep. at my school does have a big influence on decisions.

Thanks!

It doesn’t matter.

Your case is certainly unique. I think it might depend on the personality of that rep (i.e. is he/she forgiving or likes to hold a grudge?). Question: have you sent your materials in? If so, these speculations are meaningless.

I have sent part I of my application. I will be griding out part II over the next 2 weeks.

bump. I’m really worried. It’s hard to tell if she will hold a grudge.

No, don’t apply. I mean, the rep is angry at you and by you applying Early Decision implies you don’t really want to go here and that it’s just a backup if you don’t get into HYP.

Your chances of getting in have been ruined by the fact your cell phone rang.

/sarcasm

yeah thats what a lot of people have been saying. But see, Columbia is one of those schools that is really picky with application stuff and the rep. even said that they care about small things in applications like minor spelling errors (even if they are few and far between), so its hard to say how big of an impact it will have, but I think it will have some.

I very much hope your right though  :)

I do hope you get accepted, that would be funny!

Besides there are plenty of rude people at Columbia, so you might just fill their quota for insolent, disrespectful freshmen.

I WASN’T RUDE!!! I had no clue how to turn off my phone or put it on silent. It was just a terrible accident.

Have you thought about writing a nice note of apology (not an e-mail)?

I was going to but I don’t know if that would be the right thing to do. I already apologized and I think the rep. accepted my apologize but was still mad. My friend knows the rep. pretty well from a prior job so I think I will ask him. I’m gonna close this thread now (I can’t really “close” it, but I prefer to not get any more comments) because its getting sorta awkward. Thanks for the advice everyone!!

I think you’re blowing this out of proportion. While the rep is the person who will be reading your area’s apps, 1) she’s not going to remember your name necessarily- even if she does remember the incident- after reading 1000000000 apps and 2) she isn’t the only one to decide. Apps get read overs by 2 people, if I’m not mistaken.

Worst comes to worst, if she DOES remember you, she’ll probably just roll her eyes or something. And still admit you if you have the qualifications.

I think you’re probably right and yeah apps. are read by two people. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t make the final call either. I think I meat the guy that makes the final call and he seemed to like me, (which probably doesn’t mean anything). My friend knows the rep. really well (prior job), so I will ask him about the possible damage.

Thanks for the advice!!

oops met :)
