Should i even bother?

i got a composite score of 16 on my acts and i didnt do good in high school, my parents were very ill one of them just passed away and i had to take care of them hence why i did so horrible in school, i have horrible test anxiety which is why i did so bad on the acts, and with my current situation i cant go to a community college unfortunatly, i applied but i doubt ill get in with my act scores and transcripts. what do you think?

No matter how bad your situation is (which I’m really sorry about!), a 16 will not cut it. What’s your GPA?

depends if they count senior yr or not. if no its 2.98

Oh, alright dude. 2.9 is below MSU’s average for sure, but it’s not as low as I thought you meant. People are still getting accepted with that GPA.

I probably sound like an ass, but I think “test anxiety” is just an excuse for not getting the score you wanted. Then again, I don’t have it so I really don’t know. Anyone can get the score they want if they’re willing to put in the work.

Take the ACT again and again and again. If you can get like, eh, 28+, I’d gauge your chances at over 50%.

So to answer your question, Yes, you should bother. Good luck!!

o no you dont sound like an ass test anxiety is what i get when i take a test of any kind, i was considering retaking it but the thing is whether it was the act, driving test or whatever i still freeze up and have a hard time thinking. I always have but ill def go back and take the act again, maybe it will end up like my driving test, i got nervous failed the first time, second time, knew what to expect went back 2 weeks later got my lisence.

If you have that hard of a time with tests, you’re not going to do well at a university anyways. Sorry, but there are no test retakes.

You are more than likely not going to get into to MSU or most other colleges. Go to a CC for a few years and see how you do there.

I realize that my last post sounded a bit harsher than I intended. I was trying to give useful advice, not sound like a brat so please don’t take it that way :).

^ The OP may not get into State, but a 2.9 GPA and average ACT score will get someone into 60+% of collges in the nation.

^ I was more referring to the ACT which is about 5 points below average. It’s going to make it hard at many places.

For sure. But I have no doubt he can improve. Most of the kids I know who initially had 16-17 took it again and got into the 21-22 range, which while still not spectacular or anything, is acceptable.

Also apparently one in four kids at State had below a 23 on the ACT. I actually find that hard to believe.

Me too… where did you get that from?

Fwiw, I still think the OP should do a year of CC before he goes to a university, because of his test anxiety.

Romani, it says it on the MSU admissions site itself:

Fall 2009 Freshman Profile
•Entering class: 7,209
•High school GPA: 3.41-3.85*
•Composite ACT: 23-27*
•Composite SAT (Critical Reading and Math): 1030-1250*

 • middle 50 percent of enrolled freshmen

Matty12 your chances of getting into MSU will be a reach, especially if you haven’t applied yet. I looked at your recent threads to get more informatoin on your stats and you seem to state your 19 and graduated in 2009. If you took a gap year, and did not attend a cc that could also harm your chances.

If your seriously considering the school apply, also apply elsewhere.

i took a gap year to work because i needed money, and yes i applied in december. i doubt ill get in so im seriously considering cc.

matty, I would highly consider a CC for a variety of reasons. For one, it is semi-tough to get re-acclimated to academic life after a gap year. Two, after a year they won’t look at your ACT score. Three, it will be much easier to find out why you have test anxiety at a CC than at a university.

BTW: Did you apply anywhere else?

Eastern Connecticut State University. Southern Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut State university. my mom b4 she passed looked at michigan state and wanted me to look into and i applied, i talked to my social worker and guidance counselors from high school programs both have told me its a very well thought of university so i said id apply and see what happened i should be getting my rejection letter in the mail this week, my app status said they made an official decision and mailed my letter tuesday feb 23rd. but i appriciate all of your advice.

Best of luck to you and my deepest sympathies about your mom.

I don’t think they send out rejections until later in the Spring. Just saying.

If you get deferred it tells you online.

thank you roman youve been very helpful and cody idk it doesnt say anything about being deferred online, this is all it stated to me.

A decision was made on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. An official letter was mailed to you. Admission decisions are not provided over the telephone. Decision letters are mailed to applicants and typically take 7-10 business days to receive.

Would be interested in knowing the university decision.
