I was looking into a research opportunity and was lucky to find one in my state. The problem is, it’s a little far away as gas prices are concerned, and the city where it’s located, well, has been known to have a pretty high crime rate. It was ranked as the nation’s most dangerous city two years in a row in the last few years by the FBI based on its statistics. It’s not as bad as it used to be but it’s still ranked around in the top 5.

The thing is, research positions are quite coveted but I really, really, don’t want to be driving around there every morning and afternoon (especially since I’m a girl). I’d really like to try applying but I don’t know if it’s the best thing to do. Should I look elsewhere?

If you’re really interested in research and have a topic in mind or something you’ve been doing on your own, I would suggest contacting some universities around your area and talking the professors in your field. Show them some credibility and see if they take you on.

Well, you might try looking elsewhere but it’s all objective. My local university is about 30 kms from where I live and I don’t find problems in catching buses. But I’m well, not a girl
so I don’t really have problems with crimes. I’d say you may use some sort of weapon or share a ride with someone else.

I would definitely try applying and if you get it then try driving to the city and the surrounding area and just see what it feels like, and if it seems really dangerous than you don’t have to take the position.
