Should I explain why I wasn't much involved until the 2nd half of high school?

Up until sophomore year, I had really done nothing in the way of community involvement and EC’s. But then I saw “the light” and learned the importance of these things.
The reason I wasn’t so involved was due to a general laziness and a downright focus on academics.

Should I tell my colleges this in the “additional comments” section of the application?
I’ve been working to get as involved as possible since and I regret not doing so sooner.

Be careful. It is rarely true that an applicant would be involved in every EC that they are if there were no college admissions to prepare for. However, college adcoms seem to like to think that this is the case, and penalize applicants that clearly just joined a bunch of clubs for college. Make it clear that the “light” was something other than the fact that you realized you needed have something to write on your college application.

So I should tell them then (but like you said, in a way that shows that I’m not a college app stuffer)? Or should I just leave that section blank?
