Should I get a job?

First off, I am new here so I just want to introduce myself first. My name is Danielle and I am 17 years old. I am going to be an 11th grader soon. I am a very shy person, and I get nervous in new situations and I like to stay in my comfort zone. My mom calls me a homebody, I guess she is right, since I like to stay home on weekends and always have friends come over to my house.
Anyways, I think I should get a job. I mean, in a way I want to just stay at home and relax. To tell you the truth, I am too scared to get a job. I know you are probably thinking “what a wuss, what is there to be afraid of?” Well to answer that question…I am not sure. I just know that if I did get a job, I would be very nervous and I might embarass myself. I know that if I got a job, that would help my shyness and my nervousness go away.
Last year, I applied at Staples and a couple of days later, I got a call from them. They wanted me to set up an interview. I did, and the day of the interview I called and cancelled. I still need my license and I don’t have enough money to get them and my parents can’t afford to hand out money left and right. So, can anyone please have the patience to reply?
Thanks,
Danielle

Definitely get a job- but get a job at a place you like to be, not someplace random like Staples. What are your interests? Science? Art? Etc, play to your interests and find something you’ll actually like to do. The older you get, the harder it is to get a job when you have no experience… and remember, the worst that can happen is you’ll quit or be fired… it’s not a big gamble. If you post back with interests maybe I can give you some ideas?

“should i get a job?”

YES. working will help you with your social skills, force you to get out, and on top of that will make you money which is always fun.

I was 16 when I got my first job. Something about making your own money and meeting new people is great for shyness. I was very shy until I started working. It’s a good thing to do, definitely! Look around for something that you could walk to or take mass transit, if possible.

Yes, you should get a job. I’ve been working since I was 15 (I’m 18 now) and when I started I was just like you. However, having a job really helped me come out of my shell and become more social with people. I admit that I still have my shy times, but that’s normal. Plus, you get paid!! So I would recommend you give it a try.

My interests are reading, animals, i dunno, i really don’t have any interests… lol

do u need working papers at 17

I think…

Danielle,
Get a job…but here’s a good choice if you’re on the shy side…work with kids…maybe a day camp in your area is still looking for counselors? A day care? The YMCA in your area? Park and Recreation dept. in your town? You won’t make a mint, but kids are easy to approach plus you’ll also interact with staff/leaders and parents who pick up and drop off. Practice talking to yourself in the mirror…look yourself in the eye…hold your head up…I’m sure you are a great girl with wonderful qualities to share. Good luck! My daughter is starting 11th grade too!

animal hospital/clinic…is that possible for you?

If you’re particularly skilled in one area, you could offer lessons - for example, piano or guitar lessons. Or, you could be a tutor. That way, you’ll only have to work with one person - most likely a kid - at a time. Once you’re comfortable with that, you might be more willing to try out jobs that require more interaction with people.

Do you have any friends who currently hold jobs? Maybe you can ask them if their place of employment is hiring. I got my job through friends. While I don’t adore my job, I like being able to work with my friends.

I was in the exact (okay maybe not exact) position as you last year. I didn’t have a license yet but I wanted to be independent and get over my shyness.

You should absolutely get a job, but don’t overwork yourself. I applied at a fabric store and although it’s a blast working there (I’m still employed), you can’t be shy about asking for less hours. It’s stressful to work more than twenty hours a week during your junior year–just don’t do it.

Also, when I applied to the fabric store I wanted to be a fashion designer. Fast forward to the future: not anymore. My point is, getting job experience will be awesome to test out your interests and to see what kind of things you like to do. The money isn’t bad either, hehe.

I was the same. The first time I went I was like what am I doing here and why did I apply for this job. But having a job seriously helps with social skills. I worked at a supermarket and it helped me out a lot. I used to be nervous when talking to people but its not as bad now.

Ok thanks guys!
