I’m currently searching for a new laptop but I’m unsure if I even need one. My major is broadcast journalism but I plan to be making documentaries. So i need a PC computer that works for video editing, graphic design (Photoshop/Indesign) and basic functions.
Here is the specs of my current laptop:

Intel Core i3-3110m @ 2.4 GHZ
500 GB Hard Drive
RAM: 4GB
Intel HD Graphics 4000
CD/DVD Writer/Burner
You will have a hard time using Photoshop and performing video editing with an Intel integrated graphics card (HD 4000).
The stats of your laptop make it decent for a lot of things (everything except gaming, or other graphics-intensive items like video editing), so, unless you need to be able to perform these items yourself (no computer labs), think carefully about how much you need to make the switch.
Does the college that you’re going to have public computer labs that students can access? A lot of them do.
Otherwise, you may want to get something with a little more oomph. There are plenty of options out there that won’t break the bank.
