Should I get a PhD in religious studies or just stop at a masters? From what I’ve heard, getting a tenured position in the humanities is tough, although I admit I do not really want to work as a professor full time anyway.

What I’d like to do in life is be a granthi (sort of like the equivelant of a pastor or a rabbi in the Sikh religion). In addition to being a granthi I would like to be a scholar of Sikhism. Technically it is not required to have a masters to be a granthi, but it is rather hard to find good granthis. Most of the time the salary of a granthi is rather low. I plan to supplement my income working as an adjunct professor of religious studies.

Do I really need a PhD to perform independant scholarly research on Sikhism?

From what I’ve read I only need a masters to teach as an adjunct so is their any point in getting a PhD other then it’s a nice accomplishment?
