this is a problem that has been happening to me since… i don’t know… a while. high school maybe?. maybe it’s just my bad eyesight… but i don’t know. i’m going to see an optometrist soon. well, when i read something, i either have to read it word for word, and i’ll go reallly slow.(even as i reread my post right now) so slow that i’ll forget the previous line of what i have just read. and if i try and go any faster, i’ll misread something. if there’s a word that begins and ends with some letter, i’ll misread it for another word that looks like it but is a totally different word and is a word i make up in my head. like, if its a sentence about something i have an opinion of, i’ll end up changing one of their words to fit my opinion. then i go back and reread and laugh b/c it’s a totally different word that produces a very different meaning. it’s kind of hard to come up with an example right now. i’ll try to remember to write down what i misread the next time. i usually can’t remember what i read as well, unless it’s a real good sticky image. i also seem to have trouble listening to people. it’s like i hear their words, but my mind jsut goes blank, and i have to reregister what they have said. it’s terrible. just terrible. maybe i’m just a bad listener and reader. i don’t know. it’s not like i’m particularly good with numbers either. but i’m also kind of bad with letters. i think i also get to practice reading a lot. i’ve read textbooks on history, where i’ve actually read everything word for word, front to back. but i can’t remember too much of it, unless the info was also lectured in class, and if i already knew something about it. i don’t know why i’m thinking of getting checked for dyslexia now. maybe it’s b/c there’s lots of things i want to read, but i always end up putting the book down.

If you think it might help you, go for it.

Before you do, though, you should check your school’s disability services office (they have different names at different schools) and get a copy of the guidelines for documentation for students with learning disabilities (they will very likely be online somewhere). Pay attention to any rules that limit who can assess you. When you make your appointment, you should specify that if they diagnose you as having a learning disability, you’re going to want documentation that will meet your school’s requirements for getting services.

It is certainly possible that you will find just knowing to be enough, but you want to set yourself up so that you can go to the disability services office if necessary and get accommodations.

And because accommodations aren’t provided retroactively, if you’re going to do it I suggest getting started soon.

Yeah I would see a doctor about that, do you think it has been negatively affecting your grades?

I’d have it check out. It may not end up being dyslexia, but maybe another type of learning disability or you might just need your eyes checked. You will never know until you go find out.
