Should i give up on UCSD?

Im a high school junior in norcal and my conselor (who happened to be at school for the first time in ages!) told me to start thinking about college. I was like, ok? I really like UCSD and its overall location, BUT i doubt that i will get in.

-Good writer? (what im told)

So do i have shot at this school or should i lower my standards?

realistically, lower your expectations…

i know 2 people at our school with crappier grades and sat scores that SOMEHOW got into UCSD engineering/bio, respectively.

the point is, your academics aren’t going to help much, but they take into account everything, your life, financial situation, ECs, sports, etc.

Your sat is really low. And the rest of your academic rankings don’t look too great. You seem to know a lot of languages, or have proficiency in them, but you really need to exhibit academic skills in a MUCH wider range of disciplines. You do have pretty solid E.C.'s, but I would say it’s still a reach for you to get into UCSD.

Dude, forget all this lower your expectation stuff. RAISE YOUR SAT asap. There’s so much info on this site on how to do just that. Good luck!

I guess if you raised your SAT to above 2100 then you’d have a good chance… Not saying it can’t be done, but a 400 point increase is pretty unlikely.

Still apply, but keep in mind its a reach

my sat was 1750 and i got accepted. albeit for the winter quarter, but then they bumped up all of the people admitted for winter quarter up to fall.

keep in mind that stats are not everything…personal essays count, too.

still apply, but don’t put everything on getting accepted. try to raise your sat score &cross your fingers for the best. goodluck! xD

dont listen to these people

your in for sure. just write a passionate essay. ucsd likes people with rich backgrounds. talk about your story and why you know all those languages

This is bad advice and if you followed it you could find yourself without a college to attend. It’s fine to apply to UCSD but you should consider it a ‘reach’ and make sure you also apply to some ‘match’ and ‘safety’ colleges.

Exactly - You’re NOT in for sure. A good essay alone cannot get you in. You should apply to ucsd, but don’t count on getting in. Apply to some of the lower tier UC’s - Santa Barbara, Riverside, Santa Cruz, Merced, and maybe even Irvine - you have a stronger chance at those schools.

advice for the essay: get it proofread.

i don’t know if your writing style is always this haphazard, but regardless, it’s not something you want to show off to your prospective college/employer.

You guys are missing the key point:

“haitian american”

you should have a pretty decent shot at getting in

^UCSD doesn’t care what your race is.

Exactly. Since the government got rid of the Affirmative Action plan a while back, no public school considers race. Now if he UCSD were a private school, then they would consider it since private schools are obviously not funded by the government, thus they can choose to look at race.

They say they don’t consider it… haha.

Apply, work hard your senior year, don’t slack off, probably take your SAT again to get it up a tad and write essays that relate to your intended major, and talk about your background, which seems interesting considering the languages you are proficient in.

Having said this, I was admitted for Pre-Med Bioengineering, with an 1810 SAT, and a 4.37 weighted UC GPA.

Apply to UCSC, UCI, UCSB, and some of the Cal-State schools as backups, I wouldn’t go to UC merced or riverside.
