Should I go back to school for IT?

I just finished a business degree at a mediocre state college in the Bay Area and I realized I hate business. I always had a passion for computer science/software engineering. I’m wondering which university I should apply to and if I have any chance of getting a good job afterwards. My grades are high but my current school is crap. There’s no good programs there. I’m really interested in Standford and Cal, but I know they discriminate against everyone so I really have no chance there.

I’m also wondering if the IT industry is any good to work in. The first Dotcom bubble discouraged me from studying what I love. But now I’m seeing IT careers skyrocket in the Bay Area. Why is everyone still saying to avoid IT like the plague? The following discussions are examples:

Do you think I’ll have better success starting my own tech business? I’ve learned how to build websites/mobile apps over the years on my own. But I’m not sure I can find work in tech without a degree.
