I applied ED and was referred to the GSP. My intended major is economics so I think NYC location will help me in many ways such as real world experience and internship. I was thinking about Michigan and Cornell but small city is not very attractive.

Please let me know if you think I should go to the NYU or apply for other colleges.

I am looking for…
Strong program in economics
Academic quality
Starting salary
Advancement to MBA
Transgender-inclusiveness

I already applied to…
Indiana University
U of Minnesota
U of Michigan (Ross)
University of Southern California (Marshall)
Tufts University
Cornell University
Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper and Humanity)

Considering…
Brown
Columbia
U of Chicago

[ *] SAT: Not good… hope I did well in this December test
[ *] ACT : 30… (35 math 33 science but 22 reading) hope I improved in December test(I think I did)
[ *] SAT IIs: 790 Math IIC 680 Physics (I will retake them on January if I’m not going to the NYU)
[ *] GPA: 3.95 UofM(10-11)
[ *] Rank: No rank
[ *] Other stats: I have 6 APs and 1 college course(Calculus II)
AP test: Calculus AB - 5

[ *] EC: Debate(11-12)… I have an an award from regional tournament. Chess(11-12), student congress(11-12), photography(9)
My EC is about average at my school…
[ *] Essays: I think they are good
[ *] Teacher Recs: Did not read
[ *] Counselor Rec: Did not read
[ *] Hook (if any): Gender identity (if they think it is a hook)

[ *] State or Country: Originally from Korea, currently residing in South Dakota…(and yes, SD is a “state”)
[ *] School Type: Roman Catholic
[ *] Ethnicity: Asian
[ *] Gender: (Prefer not to specify)

**I transferred to my current school in 10th grade so EC is not very consistant and rank is not used.

Coming from South Dakota would be much more of a hook than “gender identity.” I don’t think being gay is any form of a hook, so why would transgender (making a large assumption, correct me if I’m wrong) be?
Either way, it looks like you have a good shot at NYU.
Never underestimate geographical affirmative action.

GSP is sometimes refered to by students as the “■■■■■■■ Child of NYU”. There’s a facebook group with that title.

It doesn’t have the best reputation here. That is not to say that there are not smart kids here. I know some incredibly smart kids who are GSP, but there is a stigma about the program. I would say it also might not be worth the money, but if money is not an object and you want to be in NYC, you can work hard in GSP and then go into CAS and do just fine.

Do the classes you will take as a GSP student interest you?

“Although the core curriculum in GSP typically satisfies the core curriculum requirements you will find in the four-year programs, the GSP core curriculum is different from say, the core curriculum required for NYU’s College of Arts and Science students. The General Studies Program has a unified curriculum, where one course relates to another. This interdisciplinary core curriculum is based on the great books, and focuses on the study of art, literature, history, philosophy, as well as political and social theory. The curriculum covers the development of civilization from ancient times to the present, and the subject matter is organized to concentrate on one historical period at a time, with interrelated courses that deal with material from all of the humanities.”
