Should I go to USF or UCF?

hello (:
i applied to UCF and got in for the spring 2012 term as a FTIC (first time incoming freshman) and was required to take less than 11 hours to reserve my status. i am currently attending hillsborough community college. being that i live next to USF and have some friends that go there, obviously i party and do social events here and around the bay area. i don’t think much of UCF, i mean i like it and it looks like a lot of fun and it’s away from my parents, but it’s like out of sight out of mind, you know?? even though i paid my $200 deposit for UCF, i went ahead and applied to USF too. if i were to get accepted to USF, would it be a bad thing to go there instead of UCF? i’m looking to study psychology, sociology, criminology, communications or maybe business. USF just seems like an easier transition for me, plus i like the area too.

i’m just afraid of what my family will say that if i’ve changed my mind for the millionth time lmao.

It wouldn’t be a bad thing to go to USF instead of UCF. All the fields of study you are looking at are available at USF. It’s a little close to the wire though switching to USF this late if you are interested in attending spring 2012 term; if you are accepted you’ll just have to hustle with the change. Your family wants you to be happy and successful with your college studies; I doubt you’ll upset them with a change in college plans–discuss things with your family and go from there.

As for you fields of interest, USF’s programs (according to the US News and World Reports) are ranked higher than that of UCF’s. As a psychology undergrad, I can definitely vouch for the psychology department and say that I do enjoy both the quality of the classes and the research. Overall, I would also say that USF is more established than UCF. Although UCF is a significantly larger school (2nd largest in the nation by undergrads), bigger definitely does not mean better. USF is more competitive, and our administration’s initiatives are soon to propel USF further into the national spotlight as a powerhouse in research and practical academia. This is something that you definitely wanna be a part of, and being that you are already established in Tampa and enjoy the setting, I think you are correct when you say that USF would be an easy transition. It’s like you said, if UCF is an “out of sight, out of mind” kind of university, would you like saying that your degree came from that kind of a school?

what i meant by “out of sight outta mind” was just the fact that UCF is an hour away and it’s like a daytrip to get out to orlando, so i don’t visit often.

it’s something i’m still considering. i’ve changed college plans SO many times haha. it’s been crazy. i’ve moved a lot in my life, so i’m hesitant with leaving again if i’ve got a job and i like it here…

BUT ANYWAY, USF Tampa seems really cool. it already says on OASIS that an admission decision has been rendered and to check in the mail. is that a good thing or a bad thing?? i applied to usf st. pete a few months ago for fall and it said that too (still does), but according to my mom (who got the letter) i didn’t get in… hmm :/

If you are considering applying for Spring and you have not already done so, make sure you do it soon-- today if possible! Time is definitely running out, and you want to get your app in the system before it’s too late.

zebra, get to the mail box before your mom does this time! I’m curious what decision USF gives you. Usually USF won’t allow transfers with less than 30 credit hours–you’re working toward getting total of maybe 11 this term. Unless USF treats you as a FTIC applicant, the 30 hr requirement might keep you from being accepted. If they defer you they will probably want to see your fall grades before final admission decision, which will be in a tight window between end of fall term and before spring term starts. Usually unless you are off the charts smart like a national merit finalist, it is tough to get in as transfer freshman year in such a short time frame. Good luck, and please let us know what the decision letter from USF admissions says.

I don’t know how it works with transfers, but with Freshman from High School, the Oasis “decision has been rendered” line means denied, they just don’t want to tell you online. An acceptance or deference would be stated as such on Oasis. But I don’t know how it works with transfers.

i applied as a FTIC freshman. and i got denied, got the letter today. i’m confused though, my stat’s were good for UCF but NOT USF? that’s weird. i had a 4.2 GPA, good EC’s, 22 ACT (which i retook sep. 10, so i dunno what my new scores are just yet)- 25 english, 19 math, 21 reading & science. so i guess that means i’m below their stats? that’s so weird cos people with LOWER stats than me got in…
should i call admissions tomorrow and see what’s up? i mean, when i applied to florida state and got denied, it was a automatic rejection because they have minimum test scores, but USF doesn’t, sooooo ***?

Well there’s a few things that could have happened. One, yout ACT is below the average for admission: According to the website, the middle 50% of ACT scores range from 24 - 28. This means only 25% of the students admitted have scores below this range.

Secondly, USF has their own weighting system and grade forgiveness system that differs somewhat from how high schools calculate the GPA, so your official GPA as calculated by USF may have ended up lower than a 4.2.

Also, there are “Academic Success Predictors” that seem to be fairly important in the decision-- look at this grid the I pulled from the website: http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Admissions/pdf/counselor-grid.pdf

There’s nothing on that chart explicitly for Spring, but I imagine the requirements would be similar.

If you’re still confused after considering those factors, you can always call the admissions office. Sorry to hear you were denied. USF is a more competitive school than UCF is.

Bummer not getting in. Do like SPY suggested and maybe call USF, they are the only ones who can tell you why you didn’t get accepted. They may have treated you as a transfer; USF only takes transfers with 30+ credits. Too USF has to turn away many students qualified to do studies there, they only have so many classroom seats and they all may have already been filled by the time you applied. USF’s acceptance rate is well under 50% for new freshmen, most applicants are not accepted. Maybe finish AA degree at your community college and reapply?

yeah, they said my GPA weighed out to a 3.2…
the best course of action they said was to do 30 hours and then transfer. hmph
if my ACT scores are super good, maybe i’ll appeal the decision, but i guess for now it’s UCF. i have to moving out somewhere in january regardless, lol i just thought i’d go down the street…
