Okay. I am a freshmen student who just started college at Shippensburg. I was introduced to the fraternity Kappa Sigma a while back. I recently learned how fraternities work, the obligations, pledges, and the things good and bad. That said, if you are currently at Ship or recently graduated from there, did you join Kappa Sigma? I like to know what all is involved, what people do in that fraternity? Are there a lot of negative things going on (like forced drinking and hazing)? Not gonna lie, but I never partied before. I also do not want to haze. If that doesn’t work out, what kinds of other frats at Ship exists? Which ones would you recommend instead? What should I be expecting? I appreciate honest and accurate answers.

I can’t speak for Shippensburg but I would suggest that you go for it. It’s going to be a dramatic and prompt shift into a vastly different lifestyle. I had partied before I joined a fraternity, but people do join them without having much experience with that sort of thing and it can be done.

Most fraternities have an anti-hazing policies but they aren’t always strictly enforced. In some fraternities at some chapters hazing still does exist. It’s next to impossible to be informed about the whole pledging process without having gone through it. There are a lot of secrets and if hazing does exist than word of it doesn’t get out easily.

I have a few friends in Kappa Sig and I know that they do enforce their anti-hazing policy. You probably are relatively safe with them but it does vary by chapter.

Ive been at ship for three years now and pledged Pi Lamb. if your not into drinking or being hazed then Kappa Sigma is where you wanna be. They have a zero hazing policy and are generally nice to their pledges. Its also a really good academic fraternity.

however it comes with a downside. people look at kappa sig differently because they didnt go though what we had to go through to get in the greek system. (pledging is what binds all greeks together in some weird way. eg. everyone told me during pledging “its ok we’ve all been there”) so Kappa sig gets almost no respect socially from the other greeks; especially from sororities like AST and KBG which youll learn real quickly thats where you wanna be. Their open parties are below par but all open parties get old quick and not hanging out with the cool, and sexy girls was for me just unacceptable. not trying to talk **** but they really are the outcasts of greek life at ship and not in a good way.

If and when you decide to join a fraternity. Make sure you put thought into it. It truly is a big decision that will effect your college experience in many ways. I would look at other fraternitys before you make a decision. At ship there is Kappa Sigma, TKE, Theta Xi, Phi Delta Theta, and the top house is Pi Lambda Phi. The other houses are more difficult to get a bid compared to kappa sig.

As for what to expect with pledging. if you chose another fraternity (i recommend it) you will probably do some things your not comfortable with. i wouldnt describe it as hazing for legal purposes, but just remember if your a pledge that means that fraternity wanted you in. they mess with you out of fun. its honestly the best time you will never want to have again.

Hello

I am a Kappa Sigma of Shippensburg who recently graduated fall '11. I pledged Kappa Sigma spring '08 and will admit it was one of the best experiences of my life. Please disregard what ASAP232 says about us being “outcasts” of Greek life. We have won fraternity of the year 4 of the last 5 years.

We participate in many community service events as well as having some pretty fun mixers (party with JUST kappa sigma members and said sorority or female sports team). Mixers occur usually once a week and usually have a theme

ASAP232 is correct about the strict no hazing policy and no forced drinking. We do NOT haze whatsoever and NO forced drinking. Our view on that is how can you torment and degrade someone and then call them your brother? Other organizations have their own views on it, but that is their call.

Pledging mainly consists knowledge of history of the chapter and getting to know the brothers as they get to know you. There is weekly meetings. We do have 2 main requirements though. Before you pledge you must have a 2.0 GPA, and 12 college credits.
Being a freshmen student, you might have to wait until spring semester to pledge pending your GPA is at least 2.0.
