YAY! So happy for you! Congratulations on not only surviving your particularly trying admissions process but on having such a great outcome. I wish you all the best at Duke!
CONGRATS!!! It’s so nice to have a happy ending (or is it a beginning?) I’ve been following this thread since the start and I felt so bad to imagine your situation. Hopefully, you take advantage of the amazing opportunity Duke has for you!
Wonderful news! Congrats! I’m glad you hung in there and that it turned out so well. What a relief it will be to go off on your own and get away from your dad’s control. Best of luck in the future!
@Fishnlines29 what goes around truly does come around
@MYOS1634 There is almost no chance I forget about this thread. I can’t express how grateful I am for all the support I’ve gotten. Simply no chance I leave this all behind… it means so much.
Some other good news about Duke just came around! It’ll actually be cheaper than all my options. Their FinAid package just came in and I received a $40K scholarship and grant. So, I’ll be paying $30K a year. My parents were just as happy as I was to see that, lol.
Wowowowow! That is great! I am sorry about your father, but because Duke is so prestigious, your dad will surely relent and let you study what you want. Tell Duke ASAP that you accept the offer. Good luck to you going forward.
@Lindagaf Thank you so so much for all your help. From the first time I posted, you, and others, like @happy1 and @MYOS1634, have been there.
Some more good news! I just got off the waitlist at UMich College of Engineering! I don’t think I’ll be going unless it’s a better financial aid package, but I’m considering it because it seems to be better for Engineering than is Duke.
Duke vs. UMich, I’d say it’s a wash in terms of “being better”. Both are extraordinarily good, let’s put it like that.
Very happy for you.
Is your father giving you a hard time with Duke, or UMich, or is he placated for now?
More good news is right. Personally I would probably stay at Duke – great school, great size/location, and a great financial package – plus I think both you and your dad are very happy right now so no reason to upset the apple cart. But let us know what you decide.
As I was reading I was hoping you would have picked ND, since it’s a good school… just not really known for what your interests are. But you would have ended up fine with a ND degree.
And then I read about your Duke admission, into Engineering, and it was like partly cloudy became a cloudless sky.
Wow! Congrats!
And now you have another great option with Michigan.
Michigan might have a slight edge in Engineering… but I would consider overall academic fit, social fit, and environmental fit (campus, surroundings, weather…) in making this decision. Cost might be a factor too, though if your dad is paying… if you don’t think extra $$$ at either school will adversely affect you down the road, then let him pay and choose solely on fit.
It sucks you had to go through this, but even after everything you have two world-class options. If you’re not thanking God, thank your lucky stars. And remember, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – especially with a positive outlook and good work ethic.
There are times when life knocks us down, and this won’t be your last hard struggle. You just have to keep working, keep fighting, and usually your effort and positivity will be rewarded.
Apologize for the late response on this! UMich hadn’t sent in financial aid until today (the last day to accept the offer) because they needed some additional forms. At UMich, I would have to pay $50k a year. Duke is $28k. Obviously, the choice was to remain at Duke! I couldn’t justify paying $80k extra, especially when, after much research, I found that Duke would be a better fit for me academically and socially. I’m originally from the Southeast, so the environment is very familiar. Overall, I just feel that Duke just would make me happier in the long run and that the difference in Engineering quality was marginal, at best.
I’ll be visiting Duke with my parents this week, and I can’t wait to see the beautiful campus.
I’m so thrilled to have finally concluded this wild process, and I’m even more thrilled to be able to say I’m a Blue Devil.
