Well I just got rejected by every UC I applied to. My transfer GPA at the moment is a 2.8 but that is due to the fact that I landed in a period of homelessness at my prior community college and I let my grades slip. I just got rejected by appeal. I explained in my appeal that my academic renewal is approved but I won’t see the changes until after June 16 and this would put me a 3.26. I was encouraged to reapply next year but I am 23 and if I don’t choose a school I might end up homeless again but the only school that offered my admission is SFSU but I do not just want to settle. I know I can get into UCLA once everything is fixed I guess. That also means that I take a year taking more classes and waiting again to possibly be rejected again. But UCLA is the school I feel I belong in. I am a Linguistics major and everything about me screams linguistics. UCLA is definitely the place for me. Any advice?
Honestly even at a 3.26 you’re not really competitive for UCLA. You can definitely take more CCC classes to try to boost your grades and reapply, but for UCLA, the average admitted gpa for linguistics is a 3.59. You’d have to do the math, and be realistic about what you can do, to see if you can get your gpa around that level by the end of fall 2015. Even if you could get your gpa up, there’s still no guarantee that you’d be admitted to UCLA. It’s all so subjective.
If you having a stable home is contingent upon being at a university, then maybe SFSU is where you need to be. It’s not settling if it’s the right decision for you and your situation.
If you’re so keen on UCLA, why not go to SFSU for your undergrad and do UCLA for your masters?
Considering your circumstances and fear of becoming homeless again, I think you should reconsider SFSU. Knowing you belong somewhere and actually getting it, are two different things. I might feel I belong at Stanford, but it ain’t never going to happen. Even going another year, I’m just not sure you’d get into UCLA. And that’s ok, it’s not the end of the world. My daughter’s bf goes to SFSU. It’s a very good university. And you just went through a gut-wrenching appeals. Do you really want another year of slogging ahead? You should look on the positive and what you accomplished!
I agree with all of the above
Didn’t you get accepted into ucla? @lindyk8
My daughter got accepted to berkeley, @franchman. >:)
Thank you guys for your responses. Now, I have another concern, so my GPA actually was just adjusted and it is a 3.42. Also, my anthropology teacher just encouraged me to stay behind and reapply. Since I am a Linguistics major, I was thinking of taking more language classes. Does anyone have any advice on how to stand out as a prospective Linguistics major? I am a published journalist and I have received several awards for my writings. I am the president of a club that I have founded that deals with writing. I have an Associates in English. I love words period. My Linguistics abstracts have received recognition in the HTCC. And so on so forth. And I have done all of this while participating in student government, athletics, other organizations including honors club. I have a 4.0 in all of my Language classes. And I am a former foster youth and I have been in periods of homelessness all while trying to maintain my insignificant GPA. I honestly just want to stand out. @lindyk8 @luckie1367 @LuckyName @2016Candles
A 3.42 is better, but still not quite at the average UCLA Linguistic admit https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm
That being said, you do have a compelling story, so long as you coherently put it in the EC and PS areas.
Can you get TAP certified? Do you have all of your other assist pre reqs done for the major?
If you can take some easy languages to boost your GPA, that would probably be your best bet for UCLA.
The average GPA is an average, not a minimum. It is very possible to get in with a 3.42, esp. if you do well in the Fall.
@anikom15 Yes, the GPA is “average” and not the minimum. You CAN get in with the average or lower GPA. But you SHOULD be higher than that to be competitive and increase your likelihood of being accepted.
Your advisor knows your situation better than any of us so if he/she says to reapply, I will defer to that. I suggest you become multilingual. Have at least two languages under your belt. Assuming you already have one, continue in it to a slightly higher level and have at least a 5-unit semester of a second language.
Actually, I just read my email and they overturned there decision. I am going to UCLA! @lindyk8 @LuckyName @anikom15 @luckie1367
Wow, congrats @Franchman it’s a bit of a shock, but a good shock! They obviously felt your predicament was an extenuating circumstance. Great news!
Congrats!
WOW - Fantastic result!
