Should I keep in contact with my local west point recruiter?

He’s a command seargant major that I believe graduated from West Point.

On a side note,
I’m a sophmore heading into my junior year. It’s summer now and I’m just working out, doing Judo, and learning to drive. Is there anything for West Point I can do over this summer?

Sounds like you are doing what you need to. I would also suggest working on any academic weaknesses you might have (if any) to shore them up. Practice SAT’s or ACT’s are a good idea.

Staying in touch with your local West Point contact is a good idea. On a side note --as a CSM he may have been stationed at West Point, but all USMA graduates are commisioned as officers.

I would also suggest playing a sport. Perhaps you can find a summer soccer league or swim team, for example.
Look for leadership opportunities. If your community has a summer program for kids then you may want to volunteer for that. Consider getting a job. If you can’t get a job then babysit or mow lawns - there are numerous opportunites out there.
Make sure your junior year schedule is on track with what West Point expects and yes, prepare for the SAT/ACT’s. Plan to take your PSAT’s next fall and the SAT/ACT’s sometime in the fall or winter at the latest.

Alright thanks. I’ll contact him sometime this week.

Other than that I’ll look for a job.

Make sure your schedule is set for next year and make sure you take classes that challenge you. Join a club if you are not in one and work towards a leadership position. Stay in shape and have fun!Side note, if he is a CSM, he didn’t graduate from the academy since all graduates are commissioned as 2Lts.

Do you need to know how to swim well?

“Well” is a relative term. You will be tested during Beast to see if/how well you can swim. A cadet can’t graduate unless they pass swimming. If you don’t know how to swim, definitely learn before you go. If you can swim, make sure you’re at least proficient in the common strokes. If you swim “well enough”, you won’t have to take any swimming until the cow year (I think). (Anyone, please correct me if I’m wrong.)

WP does have survival swimming in a specialized pool (separate from the lap/diving pools). This pool/pool area can simulate storm conditions, waves, etc. Pretty impressive. Make sure you see the demonstration offered during Plebe-Parent Weekend.

Is being an officer in two clubs enough? Or how about vice president or president of one club?

It certainly does look better to have “president” or “vice-president” on your application, but if that’s not possible due to circumstances, other officer positions are sufficient. Just try to attain the highest leadership position that you can in every extra-curricular activity that you participate in.
