<p>My mom doesn’t speak English and my dad only knows a little. I pretty much helping them translating bills and other paper works. I will be a senior this August, which means I have to look for colleges that is no more than 40 mins away from home. I’m quite disappointed. I really really want to attend Florida Institute of Technology (it’s about 4 hours away). Should I apply anyway?</p>
<p>Yes! Don’t limit yourself because of your parents. I’m sure that you can find a solution. Help them learn english, maybe. You could also try looking for somebody else that will help them out while you’re away.</p>
<p>Do your parents have any extra money? It’s very likely that the nearest Community College will offer English as a Second Language classes, at least one of them should go, and you can find a friend and neighbor that can help them as they learn. They’ll have to eventually, you’re not planning to stay with them for the rest of their lives, are you?</p>
<p>You should definitely try and apply at your dream school! Have you checked out your library, or local schools? Sometimes, they tend to have ESL classes for free for those who need it-hope this helps!</p>
<p>Definitely apply if it is your dream school. Since it’s only four hours away, you’ll be able to make trips home fairly frequently over long weekends. Have a talk with your parents about where you want to go and why it is important to you. Also, you should suggest to your parents that they should enroll in an ESL program; there are bound to be many if you live in a sizable community.</p>
<p>You carry a responsibility that few your age have. Still, I think that for your dream school, 4 hours away is do-able – you’d probably have to be disciplined enough to make it home for a day every few weeks to help out. Talk to your parents honestly and try to make it work. Also, I agree that ESL classes would be a great idea for your parents.</p>
