Should I mention this or let it slide?

I’ve been having a lot of trouble in my Intro to Chem class, even though I go to every class, do all the labs, take notes, etc. I thought I was doing okay but 5 weeks in I have a D. I was worried I was just destined to be a failure at chemistry.

However, we had a chapter quiz today and my professor accidentally sent everyone’s grades out. Out of the entire class we have 1 B, 1 C, 4 Ds, and 23 Fs.

I’m not upset about my grade being shown to everyone, but that strikes me as A LOT of failure in an Intro to Chem class. I’m not out for vengeance or anything, but I wouldn’t want a new teacher to jeopardize anyone’s grades. I’m already far enough behind that I’m planning to drop this class, but should I mention the extreme failure rate to the department head or dean, or just let it be?

I personally wouldn’t care about the general failure rate of the class; but then again, I wouldn’t have a D.

Just try to get your grade up. Go see the prof and let them know that you’re struggling and might need some help. Get a tutor.

Mentioning something like that seems to be an easy way out of actually improving your grade and your knowledge.

Yeah, I didn’t think I’d have a D either. Attending every class, every lab, doing all the homework, and getting tutoring still got me a D, though.

As I mentioned, I dropped the class because I felt so far behind I didn’t feel that I’d be able to re-learn the things I was struggling with and still keep up. I’ll take it next semester with another teacher. Mentioning it to anyone would have been an attempt to make sure this teacher didn’t need extra help adjusting to a new campus or to protect fellow students in a possible dispute. I’m no longer in the class, so it would have done nothing for me.

I won’t bother to mention the grades to anyone since it seems like a wasted effort. Much like asking for meaningful advice here.

Extreme failure rates are a lot higher than you think in intro classes like that. Don’t worry, there’ll most likely be a curve and you’ll be find as long as you’re ahead of the pack. Mentioning it to a dean or department head would be a trivial waste of yours and their time.
