Rising junior stuck at 30, can’t seem to improve for a month now, need 34. Wondering postponing Sept testing to Feb is a good idea???

You have a whole year and a half to get better, so yeah, postpone it until you’ve taken some AP classes and readnsome more book and written more essays. Keep looking at ACT material, (especially math and grammar) and do good in school and things will probably improve by February.

^^^ I took it so many times and ultimately got a great final score of 33 after five testing dates. I started with a 23. Take it!!!

I’d like to address a couple concerns. Firstly, those who score 30s aren’t the average test taker. The difference between a 30 and a 32 or a 32 and 34 is literally a couple problems per section. Given the high probability that the 30 was due to some stupid mistakes. If there were just a couple more stupid mistakes the score could drop. It doesn’t look too good if the composites are 31, 30, 29, 33, 34. Don’t take the test until there is the confidence that most of the stupid mistakes can be eliminated. This comes through more practice and especially knowing grammar and math rules.

Secondly, with ap lang, bio, and physics in the courseload, the science and reading score should improve. I know people say that science is mostly reading comprehension, but science knowledge can help a ton. For example, I took AP bio and there was a problem set about what I learner in the class. Of course, I may have been able to figure it out on my own, but I may have not had enough time to finish. (Time is a large problem for the science section) .

If realchk is aiming for a 34, it is likely that there is a non score-choice school in mind. Yale, which seems to be a top choice, requires all ACT scores. Seeing your previous post, it seems like taking it more than 2 or 3 times is a no no.

The score will improve with time in these classes. Don’t take the test each month, it’s a waste of time and money. Just get some prep books and practice often. (I got a 28 on a practice test in my sophomore year. When I took the test in the spring of my junior year, I got a 34, including a jump from an 8 essay to a 12 essay.)
