This might be long.
I’m going to be a senior in hs and am seriously considering pursuing art. I go to a high school for the arts, so I’ve had more electives/experience with this field than the average high school student with art as a hobby. I know i’m good and better than the average because of this. I’m not attempting to brag, I just want to explain my position. Anyways, with this knowledge, I feel like I have a nice standing. However, i’m very scared about work positions, the large tuition costs for great art colleges like pratt, mica, etc. I live in Florida, do not want to go to Ringling, so I’d have to move up North. I am a bit interested in nursing, business, etc. What should I realistically do? Is the art world really not as bad as it seems or is it worth the risk? I’m really stressed and concerned over this!! Please give me your opinions. Thank you!!
@starvingartists, why not consider double majoring in something like business or nursing and art? Or minoring in art? Both options would require you to attend a university program rather than a dedicated art/design school. FL has some great state as well as private university options.
The real question to ask yourself is are you looking forward to living and breathing art and design for the next four years? That’s what you will experience at a dedicated art school such as Pratt or MICA. If you like the idea of using your artistic gifts and training to apply to a practical field such as brand management (an application of graphic design) or healthcare (art therapy is one option there) then combining your art training with another field might be a good path for you.
What type of art are you interested in? Many artists do well in various fields. However, I do not recommend spending lots of money on a private art college unless your parents can easily afford it.
