Should i put this lame letter in....

I was stupid, I slacked off and got 2 Bs in 10th and 11th grade science… now the thing is i love science … but our school has boring science class thats so slow paced and dull. I got really high test scores and stuff… but didn’t do much homework (horrendous repetitive book work you would not BELIEVE!)
so i wanted to explain that the Bs were not due to my inability to understand concepts but due to slacking. I hate writing a stupid letter like this but I’m not sure if they’ll understand that I UNDERSTAND science but was lazy

i wrote this letter:

I love science, I love biology, and I love chemistry. Unfortunately our lower level science classes generally revolve around teaching an hour of material over a 1-week span and making us do repetitive worksheets. Honors simply implies that the worksheets are even longer and even more repetitive. Instead of doing worksheets I spent my time doing other things…writing code, building things, animating. I never knew I would apply to any top schools, so grades were never a real priority. I hate making excuses now, but I truly wish I hadn’t slacked.

should i put it in?

My advice… no
MIT is not looking for perfect students so you have a chance with those B’s of getting in, but giving excuses is not a good idea, and it’s worst to say that you were irresponsible with your classes.

That’s my opinion
and good luck!

B’s won’t kill you…i wouldnt put the letter in for the same reasons that omar said not to

Hmph. I really don’t see the obsession over grades. It is rank that matters I think.

Example: My english teacher is insanely difficult. B- and above is considered good. Highest grade on the final was an 84 (me), and over half the class failed. We aren’t incompetent, it is just that our teacher gave us 10 pages in short answer/essay over the semester in only 90 minutes. My school so far has had 100% of students receive the IB diploma so in order to assure they keep it perfect they make the courses harddddddd.

In my opinion Rank outweighs GPA by a lot.

Yike. I agree with the others who say not to include the letter. Why tell them you were a slacker?

SalikSyed, I wouldn’t send the letter because two B’s really won’t kill you, I know plenty of people who got in to MIT with B’s on their transcripts in science or math classes (myself included.) Good grades and test scores are simply to prove that you can handle the work at MIT. Having passion proves that you could thrive in a place like MIT, so I would focus on writing essays that really convey your passion for the other things you were doing in place of laboring over busywork for those classes.

Grades aren’t everything!

sweet… as long as they know i have passion its cool … ? yay… that makes me feel so much better

yup yup :)
