Hi
I gave my act in December
I got composite 34
Math 34
English 34
Reading 34
Science 32
Writing 10
I know my scores are great
But i also know that I could easily got a 35 maybe even a 36
I live in india
I plan on applying to ivy leagues and top universities in the us like caltech
For computer engineering
I just want to know what people think
Should i re give the test?is it worth it to maybe get a 36?
I don’t think it’s really worth retaking a 34.
Retaking a 34 would send the wrong message - that you focus on the wrong aspects of your education or may not understand what your application should look like. Work on your EC’s instead.
It’s tough to say, especially for an international applicant. My D applied to the same schools as you are looking with a 34 and it appeared that MIT was the only school where that score was below their median applicant. (She ended up not reporting the 34 because her SAT score was higher). Are you planning on taking the SAT as well? The tutor who my Ds worked with advised to always take each test twice, and she seemed to be backed by the data; it helps with superscoring, there’s less downside risk since you don’t need to report all scores with some schools. It will also depend on what your sense is that you could have done better; have you scored alot better in practice? Are you planning on studying more before the next test? But I agree too with the others that it’s not imperative for you to retake it if the rest of your application is strong.
Yeah, you have a good score right there.
FYI, in American speak, teachers “give” a test. Students “take” a test".
@GMTplus7 I read somewhere that in Hindi, the phrase meaning “take a test” literally translates to “give a test.” and vice versa, even though 99.9% of native English speakers will say that the students take a test. I don’t know about “write a test” or “sit a test” but they’re probably similar.
For example, a lot of Chinese people I speak to, if they’re not fluent in English, often use incorrect tenses or don’t use articles (e.g. Yesterday, I go to supermarket, instead of Yesterday, I went to the supermarket). That’s because tenses work a lot differently, and Chinese doesn’t really use articles.
Thanks for defending me but it was a genuine mistake
I speak english as my first language but I’m not that good at written grammar
I have really few ECs
But my school grades are 90% and above and i got 790 in math 2c
I don’t think I’m going to take the test again as in india, there are really few test dates.
Why would I give the sat as well, the act is a substitute for the sat right?
Sat english would probably be my downfall
Thanks for the replies guys.
Again, it’s more correct to say “take the SAT” instead of “give the SAT.”
Schools usually require one or the other, so you probably don’t need to take the SAT. Also, the current SAT has a lot of tricky grammar and vocab, so I advise against taking it unless you think you can score really well.
I would focus more on ECs and the rest of the application.
Thanks
I agree
Grammar is not my strong point
Ill give the physics sat subject test instead
Oops
“Take”
This is an annoying habbit
Also, take a math subject test as well if you haven’t already. Many top science/engineering universities require a math subject test. If I remember correctly, Caltech requires Math II so take Math II.
If you “give” too many tests, does it put you in danger of having nothing left?
I’ve given lots of tests. I still have quite a few handy.
When I gave the GRE, I came home feeling like I had nothing left.
