Hi everyone! Hope all is well.
I was applying to a few small, last minute scholarships from fastweb and other websites the other day and I submitted an application to a scholarship fund for people with LGBTQIA+ volunteer experience. I was also completely oblivious to the fact this aforementioned scholarship was funded by a sex toy website until after my submission. I am really only bothered by this because the winners’ names will be posted on the website. Should I be concerned about future implications of this (i.e: my name being posted on this website) or am I being overly paranoid? – Should I rescind my application while I still have the chance?
Thanks and stay cute~~
own it, honey
itll make for a killer story when you’re in college lol. you’ll be a legend.
Don’t worry, it won’t hurt you - just contact the company if you win and tell them you wish your name to be removed from the web when next year’s winners are announced.
Never heard of anyone winning a FASTWEB - listed scholarship, so probably nothing to worry about.
Coke, GE-Reagan, Jack Kent Cooke, etc are all listed on Fastweb. Just an fyi.
@Madison85, I think this one was actually listed on the HRC website and not fastweb, I’d have to double check though. On the scholarship page, it said no one applied last year; it’s not advertised well. I’ll see what happens. Truthfully, I think I’m just being overly paranoid. If anything, I’ll follow @MYOS1634’s advice. (But I don’t even know if I’ll win.)
Good for you for finding an under-utilized scholarship - good luck!
As for your original question . . . I don’t know if your concern is about being outed (which is a personal decision) or about being associated with a sex toy website. If it’s the latter, I wouldn’t give it a second thought - applying for (and winning) a scholarship is nothing to be embarrassed about. If a future employer discovers it and asks about it, you just need to tell them that you haven’t ever used the company’s products, but are proud to have won their scholarship. End of story.
If having your name posted is a condition of winning, I’d withdraw your app.
LOL this is a funny problem. Is your name really unique? Either way, I don’t think it’s a huge deal. I could be naive so take this with a grain of salt but I don’t think a sex toy website is insanely taboo. Especially if you have experience volunteering with LGBTQIA+ groups. It doesn’t seem any more unmentionable than groups on campus having free condoms available or something. I think anyone who actually Googled you and found this would assume they were simply sponsoring the scholarship rather than you having any sort of personal connection to the company/products.
Money is money.
The contest semantics shouldn’t matter.
I strongly disagree. Lots of companies offer scholarships. Using their products is generally not a condition of applying, and it shouldn’t make any difference whether it’s dog food you don’t use, car insurance you don’t use, or sex toys you don’t use.
It would be different if this were an award offered by a political organization with a particularly heinous reputation (“Young American Nazis” or some such), but that’s not the case here. It’s a business trying to make itself look better by rewarding your good works - nothing wrong with that.
I’m a vegetarian animal rights activist who won a KFC scholarship. I’d much rather be associated with sex toys.
But money is money. I seriously doubt this will be an issue and unless you have an extremely unique name, I wouldn’t worry about it one bit.
Seriously, given some of the nefarious business dealings of many well-known companies, I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep over this!
