Should I retake the ACT for USC, UCs, Accelerated Dental Programs?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a junior attending a very competitive high school in California.

I recently got my ACT score back and wanted to know if I should retake it again in April or June for:

  1. USC
  2. UCLA
  3. UCI
  4. UCSD
  5. Accelerated Dental Programs (UOP, Penn, Columbia, NYU, BU, etc.)

ACT:
Composite: 34
English: 31
Math: 36
Reading: 31
Science: 36
Writing: 23 (8/8/8/8)

Please help me out!!!

No, I think your scores are fine really for the schools you mentioned. I would suggest to focus on your other stats too. It won’t be only the ACT score that will matter. Although it does, I think you have already a great score. I would advice you to make everything else just as great. And I am sure you will get into any of the ones listed above.

I wouldn’t be too sure about Columbia though.

Are any Ivy League Schools matches with my score? I’m too 5% of my class as well.

Ivy League? I highly doubt it.

I think you could look at Cornell, Columbia and UPenn.

But I think other reputed ones could be Brown, Amherst, Duke, Univ of Chicago, Dartmouth.

I would still consider all of them reaches. You might want to work on extracurricular as well. Your academics are already excellent.

Thanks! I’ve focused my extracurriculars on dentistry. I’ve created a pre-dental club at my high school and have shadowed two dentists so far! Plus many volunteer clubs and officer positions as well. I will create a “Chance Me” thread at the end of my junior year to see what my chances are.

That’s good! I’m sure you would get into a wonderful college! Your stats are amazing!

Thank you so much! Your comments have been really helpful!

A 34 ACT is terrific. It is above the average for every single university in America. The top schools are still going to be reaches, but that’s just the reality when schools are admitting less than 10%. They are reaches for everyone.

The UCs emphasize grades more than test scores, but you seem fine there as well.
