I just took the SAT this past December, and I got a 2250. I got a 790 Math, 750 CR, and 710 Writing, but I only got an 8 on the essay…

I’m going to apply to the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, etc.

2250 is pretty darn high. The essay is the most subjective part of the SAT, and as far as I can tell, the least influential when it comes to admission. I’d spend more time perfecting essays than worrying about an already very good score.

I would retake. Only 1 of your scores is at the 75th percentile for ivies and that’s where you want to be if you don’t have a hook. The writing score score should be easy to up with practice–it formulaic.

this may be a stupid question, but what exactly does “having a hook” mean?

Well, I’ve taken too SAT Subject Tests so far: Bio (780) and Chem (800) and will take Physics, Math II, and probably US this year, and should do well on all of them. Maybe that will cancel out the writing?

Your scores are fine. Whether you get 2250 or a 2400 will not make or break you. As tothesky mentioned, the writing scores don’t count for much.

I wouldn’t retake. Most schools don’t consider the writing portion equally with the verbal and math portion, and some outright ignore it. It’s a fantastic score. You should be proud.

bump…

There’s a lot of misinformation here.

Also, no, one score won’t “cancel” another.

A hook=recruited athletes, legacies, URMs, staff kids and development. These groups comprise 40% plus of every class at ivies and peer colleges. Having extreme national/internal talents awards and achievements can also be a hook.

This is why the unhooked–those who are top of class with 12 APs and everything in order-- want to be at or above the 75th percentile in every score for a real shot. They need to bring up the scores for the hooked. 75th percentile is 790 at HYP, and aprox 770 at the other ivies.

There is no question, as any common data set will show, that higher scores will greatly increase the OPs chances.

Could you guys chance me? Here’s the rest of my application.

Did you prep a lot the last time? If you think you can study and do better, then retake. Otherwise, it seems to me unlikely that you can improve on those already pretty high scores.

You can take it again if you like but SAT scores do not help college admissions as much as some would think. Your GPA is more important than your SAT scores. You also don’t need 10 APs either, you are judged in the context of your high schools. This would be my 8-10th year reading CC and also from reading 30+ college admission books.
