I was wondering if I stay in honors geometry during my freshman year will that decrease my chances of going into Ivy leagues? Most of the students at my school are taking honors algebra 2 with trig in their freshman year and I want to catch up, my counselors are telling me that it is hard but I think I can do it I already know most of the material.
A good and solid foundation in math is very important.
Even with all the math courses under the sun, there is no guarantee you will get accepted at an Ivy League college.
Summer courses are very truncated…a lot of matter in a short time. Will that give you the foundation you need?
Where I am…the accelerated math is geometry, algebra 2, precalc, calc. That sounds like what you are doing if you are in geometry now. Is it?
use your summer to relax and enjoy your time to yourself. Don’t compare to what other students are taking.
No. Hitting the submit button on your application lowers your chances
Geometry as a freshman is already advanced compared to most. No brownie points are awarded by colleges for taking calculus as a junior
It is thanks!
This is exactly right.
This is also exactly right.
Nearly everything that you learn in math is based on what you learned (or were supposed to learn) last year. What you will be learning next year is going to be based on what you are learning now, and what you learned last year. In my experience if you are very strong on all of the prerequisites calculus for example is quite straightforward. I have consistent heard that if you are shaky in any of the prerequisites calculus can be very difficult.
This means that jumping ahead in math is not a good plan. Learning math very well is a good plan (and likely will also help you get good grades). You want to learn the concepts well, and specifically do not just memorize things.
Also, as you progress through your education, you are going to discover something: You cannot keep up with every student in every subject. It is just not possible. Fortunately, it also is not necessary. You be you. Take the classes that make sense for you. Do well in them. Participate in the ECs that make sense for you. Treat people fairly. It will work out.
