I’m deciding on a in-state college, and I am thinking whether I should sleep away or not.
Is a 30-60 minute, there and back, daily drive (missing out on the fun side of college, meeting and being with new people) worth lowering my college costs?

I need some ideas, logic, reasoning, suggestion.
Anything would help from someone who’s been there and done it.

No, that’s not worth it at all. You won’t be spending enough time at home, and you won’t be spending enought time at school. The end result is you won’t really be a part of either community. Definitely spend more to stay at college. You’re missing out on the most important part of college if you don’t.

A family member of mine commutes to and from school. It works for her. It really depends on the person. Some people don’t let commuting hamper them and it can be a good experience. Other people are miserable doing it.

My dad considered commuting to college (via bus and subway, apparently it took him upwards of two hours each way each day) one of the biggest mistakes of his life. He’s really disappointed he missed out on making solid college friends and having an actual college experience. When I was tasked with looking at schools he told me I wasn’t allowed to apply to any within a 90 minute drive.

That’s a fairly long daily commute. A lot of study groups and class exam reviews happen in the evenings because that’s when it’s easiest for people to coordinate their schedules–not to mention, that’s also when a lot of clubs meet and activities are held. Would you be willing to drive home that long a distance late at night several days a week? What would be your costs for gas/parking/insurance (it goes down if you don’t have a car while living on campus) and wear-and-tear on the car? Also, for all the time you put in to commuting you could work on campus a few hours a week to help with the expense.

Start out first semester (at the very least) on campus, that way you get to know people, and have a support system there. Then in later semesters you could finagle your schedule so that you only need to commute one to three days a week for classes, so the driving every day wouldn’t be an issue.
