Should I stay in school newspaper or continue foreign language?

I am currently at Journalism 1, and due to conflicting schedules,
I have to decide between Journalism 2, which is where I get to write in the school newspaper or to continue Spanish 3.

I want to continue Journalism 2, because it’s like a creative outlet for me, at the same time I feel like discontinuing foreign language will be a huge disadvantage for me.

Any advice?
What should I choose?

Look at the websites for schools you are interested in. Some require or recommend 3 or 4 years of a FL.

Also, be aware that Spanish is considered an academic subject, Journalism is an elective.

I’d do the Spanish - because so many schools strongly recommend 3 years - and talk to your journalism teacher about the fact that you’d like to continue with the newspaper as an extra-curricular activity.

I agree with the above posters, and would add that with three strong years of Spanish, at many schools you might be able to test out of any foreign language distribution requirement.

Thank you…

although there’s something inside me saying “you know what, YOLO, take whatever you want, do journalism, and not what colleges want to see…”

If Journalism is that important to you, perhaps you can find a way to satisfy both your passion for journalism and the language requirement.

Could you talk to either your Spanish teacher or your Journalism teacher about doing 1 independent study?

Could you go to Spanish summer school?

Could you find an online course of some kind?

Could you petition to skip to Journalism 3 if such a course exists?

Could you do some kind of dual enrollment and take Spanish at a community college at night?

Agree with above posters. 3yrs lang is a requirement by some selective colleges, wheras your elective of Journalism isn’t. Follow CuriousJane’s advice and try to do Journalism on the outside. Best of luck to you.

Why don’t you take Spanish 3 junior year and journalism senior year?
