Should I stick it out before transferring?

I’m an incoming sophomore undergrad. I hated my first year at my state’s public school. The student body was way too large for me, and no matter what I did (joining a sorority, joining clubs, going to the sports games, etc.) I still had trouble making friends. The school is also too expensive, and not very diverse in its student body. I originally went to this school because it had the strongest Anthropology program in my state, but now I intend to change my major. I want to transfer to Wellesley as a Media Arts and Sciences major, but I hate the thought of returning to my state school even for one semester. I had originally planned to transfer to a liberal arts college in my state before transferring to Wellesley for the next spring semester, but my mom thinks that jumping from one school to the next may not be a good idea and that I should stick it out if possible. What should I do?

I’d rather you take a semester off from school entirely, rather than transfer to school 2 only to transfer into Wellesley. If you can’t stand attending your current uni for one more term, stop. Take a term or a year off, and do something signficant during that time - volunteer work, something related to your future major, get a job, etc.

Wellesley admits about 15-20% of students who apply to transfer, so it would be wise of you to use this time to look at some other schools you may also like, and to apply to them as well, as backups.

If you’re an incoming sophomore you could consider withdrawing and going to your local CC for a year, and then applying to transfer.
