Should I still apply to NIEHS SIP?

I applied to NC Governor’s school Math this year and most likely will be accepted. I am, however, interested in research and there are few options in my city. I applied to RSI, which is basically guaranteed rejection, and was also interested in NIH and SIMR but decided not to apply because my family can’t afford to pay for my housing.

I looked at NIH again out of curiosity and saw that the NIEHS campus is in Raleigh! My bad for not noticing that before…I have relatives in Raleigh that I can stay with. I also read on the NIEHS site that the researchers there do not begin reading applications until Feb 1st (supposedly), so I might still have a chance if I apply now.

My general stats are no research experience yet, a couple not extremely prestigious national awards in STEM, self-taught in Python, extensive and notable community service, leadership in two clubs, several university courses taken, including comp-bio course online from UCSD, several AP’s, and 3.92 unweighted GPA.

The problem is, my family in Raleigh is in a difficult financial situation so it would be a stretch to stay with them. Also, I don’t know how good my chances are. I am definitely very interested, though!

Has anyone else done NIEHS SIP, and do you think it is worth it in my situation? Can you back out once you’ve been accepted? Thanks.
