Should I switch from BME to ChE (already in 3rd year)?

Hi everyone,

So I have just completed my 2nd year in Biomedical Engineering. Recently my cGPA has dropped low enough that I can no longer consider medical school. I had originally planned to major in BME and do pre-med, but with my low GPA I don’t know if medical school is still an option. Now, I am going back to my engineering back up, but how much of a backup is BME really.

I have heard all the stories about how it is very difficult for biomedical engineers to find jobs and many graduates/masters/phds biomedical engineers all struggle with finding a job right after graduation. It is already hard enough to find internships/co-ops as biomedical engineers so now that my pre-med ship has sunk, I am wondering whether I should switch to Chemical engineering major. Unfortunately, because I will soon be in my third year, I will most likely not graduate in 4 years if I choose to purse ChE. The good thing is I should only be behind by 1 semester if I choose to switch now.

The question is whether ChE is worth it. I really enjoy the stuff we learn in BME but I can’t help but feel that we are only getting a surface level understanding of everything while ChE get more in depth in their material. Some things I want to know before switching is which major would be more difficult, as my GPA is only a little above 3.0 I do not want it to tank even further so how difficult are the BME vs ChE classes? Please help me make a decision…I don’t want to throw away all the time I have wasted in BME but I also don’t want to regret my decisions later when it is too late. I would like to pursue a career doing biomedical related things, but I just wonder if a ChE degree would help me better achieve that.
