I have an interview coming up and it could be an internship during the school year. I could free up some time by dropping a class…I just don’t know if I should or not.

What would you do?

(Paid, 20 hr/week)

How flexible are they in terms of hours? How does work fit in with your class schedule? Is it directly related to something you want to pursue as a career? What year are you? How have you been doing academically so far?

I worked 10-20 hours a week during the school year during my junior and senior years and on rare occasions worked more. My company was very understanding about school and would let me take off if I had crushed for time, as long as I didn’t abuse it. I worked around my classes so as not to affect my academics.

I’m a sophomore majoring in EE/CE…internship is a hardware lab internship with a audio video communications company…I’m not sure about their hours yet…

If they can work with your schedule as much as possible (won’t schedule you for times that overlap with your classes) you should most definitely take it if you think you can handle the reduced amount of free time to have fun/study. You will have to make sure you really stay on top of studying.

Do internships typically require work outside the job?

No, not usually. It’s a possibility but unlikely.

By that question, if you mean do you have to do work away from the office and not get paid, then no that won’t happen.
