Should I take AP Physics 1? [instead of regular physics; also graphic design 3 versus French 3]

I’m mostly planning to commute, so I’m targeting colleges nearby.

Maybe consider community college then and save some $$. If you’re not living on campus, personally, I don’t see why you need a four year. Then you’d have more flexibility in two years to pursue a wider range of schools.

Thanks for all the advice! But now that I’m doing French 3, should I take AP French senior year?

French 3 is the minimum expectation for a selective college.
AP French would bring rigor up for the most competitive colleges so if you’re aiming at sub-25% acceptance colleges (or highly selective majors at UCs) it’d be a good idea and would decrease the number of semesters you’d take it in college (perhaps to zero if you score a 5 or just one otherwise). That being said your senior schedule is already quite ambitious so I’m not sure there’s space for it. The trade off is one or two semesters of French in college.
Have you run the NPC on colleges listed on this thread?

Be sure you take all courses necessary for consideration for admission to UC colleges. But that said, I have a different take. I agree that French will be a better choice for college apps b/c you do want to show 3 years of a language, but there is also something to be said for pursuing what you like, not what will look better on apps. Maybe you can take French 3 next year.

Yes

Which, among the public and private possibilities listed, had a 25k net cost for tuition+fees+room+board?

This student is a high school junior. They will be graduating high school in 2027.

The net price calculators are currently being reset for students starting college fall 2026, and that is not this student.

Any results should be viewed as a gross estimate only.

This student will use 2025 tax year income and information for the 2026-2028 academic year (their freshman year in college). 2025 has not even ended…yet.

So…please be mindful of this info. They will have to do the NPCs again early September of their high school senior year. And yes…the colleges financial aid calculations do change sometimes.

Ok, that’s great - one a high target and one a safety.
You’ll have to complete the NPCs “for real” August before senior year but that gives you an idea of what’s possible, that you don’t have to commute if you don’t want to (or don’t get into your major of choice at the closest CSU).
CSU Chico with the Honors college is worth checking out btw.
FTR Sonoma State has good housing BTW, Cal Poly Humboldt is residential too.
UCR is a great target for you. :crossed_fingers:
