Should I Take APUSH (I want to major in AI @ colleges like MIT)?

As the title says, I am on the fence of whether I should take APUSH next year (I am currently a sophomore). I plan on majoring in AI/Computer Science at top schools, and here are some of the other APs I am currently taking/plan on taking:

AP Computer Science A
AP Statistics
AP Calculus BC
AP Physics 1
AP English Language* (on the fence for this one too)
AP Physics C Mechanics/Electricity and Magnetism
AP English Literature* (on the fence for this one too)
AP Microeconomics
AP Macroeconomics
Calculus III and Linear Algebra (or Differential Equations) at a nearby college (Fairfield University/Norwalk Community College) or with my math teacher.

We also have Project Lead The Way courses at my school, and I plan on going in the engineering route for those:

Introduction to Engineering and Design
Principles of Engineering
AP Computer Science Principles
Engineering Design and Development

Now, I would like to talk about why I don’t want to take APUSH, and to a lesser extent, AP English. This year, we have to take a course called Pre-AP Early American History, which covers a little less than half of the APUSH curriculum in one semester. Next year, I will complete the rest of APUSH by academic Q3 and then we will work on review for the exam. The main reason I don’t want to take it is because it seems pointless to me. The other required USH course is CPUSH, and I feel like if I took that, then my time could be better applied to projects like machine vision and machine learning using TensorFlow.

You have probably guessed by now that I am not a big fan of history, or writing essays. I can do it, but I won’t enjoy it the way others in my class do. Math and computers is more my speed, and it’s just that I don’t know how rigorous of a course load I have to have in order to get into elite colleges like MIT and CMU. Even if I don’t take AP English, I still will have taken 8 APs, and the PLTW courses give me college credits (and obviously the Fairfield University courses).

I can talk more about the other stuff I want to do/am doing (which includes SAT subject tests and extracurriculars) in the replies. Thanks so much. I looked at some similar posts about APUSH for MIT, and they said that APUSH gives you “9 MIT credits”, but those can’t be applied to humanities courses at MIT.

Honestly, if high school is even supposed to be even slightly fun, I don’t think I should burden myself with 13 APs over my high school years just to get into an elite college. I believe my extracurriculars are mediocre right now, but I am going to start a programming club next year (and maybe a Mu Alpha Theta chapter in my school), as well as join the NHS and Science Honor Society.

I took APUSH and honestly, out of all the AP classes I have taken (12 total), it was the most useless for me. If i had to redo high school (I’m graduating in a week) I would only take the AP classes that would help me with my major which is biology. However, if US history is a requirement at your school and your only other option is to take honors US history, and you’re worried about your GPA, i would take it, it’s not a hard class, just extremely useless because I, like you, hate history and love science and math. My best friend was just accepted into MIT, and the main thing that got her in was her role in the robotics club. She basically led them to nationals, they placed in the top 15 or something. other than that, she was in the engineering program at my school, got good grades, and good test scores. She wasn’t even top of our class, she’s 5th i think because I am 6th. She was in NTHS, science honor society, and NHS, i think she had a leadership position in NTHS though i’m not in it so I wouldn’t know. She was the secretary of Science honor society though. It was her academics and robotics that got her in. Her test scores were good, but not like 1600 or 36 perfect, so I’d say if you keep your grades high, get some recognition for your programming, join some clubs, and get good test scores, you’ll have as much as a shot as she did.

I know you’re supposed to be good at time management if you want to succeed and go to MIT, but I really find the current “APUSH” class I’m taking a waste of time when it comes to homework. Even if I don’t take APUSH, I’ll still have 12 APs under my belt, and my current GPA is still about 3.96, so that is not an issue. I’m already part of the math team (for like some local competition and one time we did AMC10) and debate team, but I’m going to join the robotics team and like I said before, maybe start a programming club. I’m already part of a Boy Scouts troop (I should be able to become Eagle - but after I apply to colleges sadly) and I have been doing martial arts for probably over 10 years.

My school doesn’t do class rank, but I took 2 APs this year (my friend took 3), but some have taken 1 this year (Human Geography) and most have taken none. I would say my class rank is relatively high (we can get our rank for college and scholarships).

I think that I’ll still take both AP English courses and I was also planning on taking AP Government instead of Civics (we do civics senior year). That brings me up to 12 APs, and if MIT considers APUSH as just another “rigorous course,” then it’s probably better for me to not take APUSH, even if that means I have to take CPUSH.

Also, did your friend take APUSH? I’m assuming she did.

As an Engineer, I would ditch APUSH but take AP Lit/Lang,
You need to be able to communicate with others about your work.

Yeah, so I’ve decided to take all the APs I wrote above (including APUSH). I will also take AP Lit/Lang, and I’me thinking about taking AP US Government & Politics (in place of Civics 1 and 2 - we take those senior year).
