Should I take Sat II Chinese?

Hey CC,

I’m a second generation Chinese whose mother language is English, but I speak Mandarin at home. Still, I can barely read Chinese, and my vocab isn’t that good. So is it worth it to take the Sat II Chinese? I’m taking French at school, so I could also take the Sat II French.

I wouldn’t bother with it. Most of the people who take SAT II Chinese are probably native, fluent speakers. Although you can’t read Chinese, you are still a second generation Chinese so colleges may not even care to take your SAT II Chinese score into account. Just take other SAT IIs that you think you might do well in.

(I asked a similar question awhile ago. I’m Korean, but my family only speaks either English or Konglish at home. I still speak Korean comfortably because I watch Korean dramas and reality shows 24/7 LOL)

Yeah, it’s probably a lot easier for native speakers to take their native language…no studying! (or atleast a lot less)

(I speak mostly Chinglish, but my parents always speak Mandarin. I wish we could get Chinese channels, 'cause there’s a really cool show about a legendary monkey. xD)

I’m in the same situation as you, EveningSwan :stuck_out_tongue: I was thinking about it, and taking Chinese won’t harm you, but it probably won’t help you either. So I’ll probably go with Japanese because I already took AP Japanese, but I didn’t do too well on the test, so I want to retake to show colleges that I’m ok with it.

I think the show you’re thinking about is xiyouji. The monkey is sunwukong. He’s really famous in China xD

I think I’ll take the French test…I took the National French Test during the spring and I managed to place in the top ten percent.

Yup! I have a few CDs of xiyouji. I always watch it when I go back to China. I especially love the pig xD

Nice, go for French then :D

It’s awesome, isn’t it? xD Yeah, the pig’s hilarious, but the monkey will always be my fav ^^
