I’m applying to both UCLA and Cal through the tap program for Fall 2013, which means I only have to send out my fall and spring grades (3.7 GPA - 6/9 being scholars classes) unless I want to take a summer class (statistics). The reason why I would take the stats class is because I would need a transferable math class (which I haven’t taken) before fall 2011 to apply for the TAG program (UC Irvine, San Diego, and Santa Barbara). I’m scared that my statistics class will be hard, and that I’ll get a B which will drop my GPA to a 3.6. Should I take the stats class, risk it, or wait off and see if I can take it another time and maintain my 3.7 for the time that I apply without the TAG? I’m a little paranoid. :/

What’s your major?

I feel like the UC’s favor applicants who complete math, english, and pre-reqs by fall. I say take it if you can find an easy professor. Stats is pretty easy if the professor lets you use notes.

Lol I wish I had to worry about a freaking statistics class… here I am memorizing Linear Algebra and Differential Equations proofs. Sighh.

I think that you should take the math class because even with TAP, you aren’t guaranteed acceptance. Besides, even with a 3.6/3.7, you should definitely have some backup schools. You need a transferable math class for IGETC which you need to take this year anyway… so were you planning on taking it in the Spring so they wouldn’t see a B grade until after you’re accepted?

“I would need a transferable math class (which I haven’t taken) before fall 2011 to apply for the TAG program (UC Irvine, San Diego, and Santa Barbara).”

No, you can take your math course DURING Fall 2011 and still apply for TAG to UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara. For Davis, you can even take a transferable math course the Spring before you transfer and still be TAG certified.

UCI is the only campus that requires you to finish a transferable math course BEFORE Fall 2011 (meaning Summer 2011 or any time before). Here’s the TAG Matrix.

I am a psych major, so I really don’t need anymore than one math class. And I need to finish IGETC by Fall? I definitely won’t finish IGETC and prereqs by the time I apply…But by Spring before Fall I will have everything done. And thanks for the TAG information! I think I only looked at Irvine and assumed they all had the same policies.

And yeah, I was planning on taking it for Spring so they don’t see a B grade until after I’ve been accepted, but I think I’m just going to take it and stop being a little b****. Thanks for everything guys (: Wish me luck!

Haha I think you will be perfectly fine. Take it and get it over with!

I took calc II in the winter and I survived…

I took calc1 at a CC when I was 16… I haven’t died.

you’ll be fine if you take it during summer. I took it this spring and got accepted and I’m a terrible math student. I was failing in the beginning of the semester but ended with a B (which is awesome because I suck). If you’re worried about your gpa dropping, get The Complete Idiot’s guide to Statistics. It helped me so much! It might give you an A if you’re a good math student.

It’s better to get your math requirement done ASAP.

You will be fine, so long as your algebra skills are up to par. Elementary Stats is basically plug and play and the formulas are more intimidating looking than they actually are. If you get an instructor that actually lets you use notes for exams, then you’re in even better shape.

If you need any help, shoot me a message and I’ll be glad to assist you if I can.

Good luck with your studies.

Stats is E-Z. Take this from an English major who detests math. It was actually a pretty fun class too.
