This semester is kicking my a-- right now. I’m taking four classes, English 102, Chemistry, College Alegbra/Precalcuis, and Public Speaking Which i regret. The only class I’m doing well is Public Speaking. The rest I’m not doing so well. Chemistry is way too hard, same thing with precal and this is my first time taking that class in my entire life. In high school, the highest math course i took was trigonometry. I’m so overwhelmed with the amount of essay to write in english. My teacher gave the class two essay assignment like there’s no tomorrow and everytime i do the paper, i end up getting writers block.first paper i have to write 5-7 pages and the second paper 6-8 pages. My first semester (fall 2015) at community college that 2 of my classes were non credit. Felt like i did all the hard work for nothing. Spring 2016, i took three classes but withdraw one because my intermediate algebra professor was going too fast and the class was only 45 minutes for three days. My English class was also non credit, which made me so mad however i passed with a C+. First year experience, C+. Fall 2016 i took four classes, withdraw one because I wasn’t doing so well in sociology because of my teacher wasn’t good at teaching. However i passed criminal justice with a C, i retook math from the spring semester with a C+, and I passed English 101 (that’s a credit class) with a B-. Here I am in Spring 2017, Failing Chem, and Math, and not sure about English but most likely since I’m way too stressed out. Now I’m burnout from this semester it’s time to register for next semester and according to my advisor I’ve earned 16 credit this whole time since I started college back in 2015 and i need to get 60 credits to get a Associates degree in general studies. I feel so far behind and i want to transfer to a four college already. My original plan was to spend two years at community college but it’s now delayed. Is it my fault I’m so behind that I started my classes at the lowest level? I’m not sure if i should do summer courses because I feel drained and unmotivated right now. This semester was way too much for me and I just can’t wait for it to be over. So Back to the original question, idk if i should take summer courses since it’s only seven weeks versus fifteen and I’m not sure if i can handle going at a fast rate. Idk what to do and i want to leave community college already. My GPA is 2.34 and hard for me to bring it up. I’m so annoyed about all of this
Feels like it’s the end of the world :((
Maybe you could mange one or two summer classes, but if you are struggling a bit with a regular semester, I would not advise tackling on too much. The summer semester can be extreme because they do cover what a typical semester would cover - this means going through 3 or so chapters in the textbook per week! I understand how you feel. It took me 4 years to transfer out of CC. I had only completed 3 classes my first year, but this was mainly because I didn’t know I could enroll in other CCs in the same district and I didn’t have any financial aid. Have you researched your professor using ratemyprofessor? It is sad, but sometimes there are unreasonably bad professors. I struggled quite a bit with math and had to take intermediate algebra too, but I was able to test out/challenge that decision and took a transferable math course. I wound up with a B, but it was only because the professor was so lenient in his grading and overall quite nice. Good luck. Don’t give up
Classes at a university are likely to be harder. Maybe you should address the root cause of your grades, whatever it is, before taking on additional challenges.
I do agree with bodangles. I took a summer session at university and I actually did not pass one of the classes. That never happened to me while at CC. I’ve done a bit better, but university level courses can appear quite a bit more difficult because the slackers that are sometimes found in CC classrooms have been weeded out and now all the students are pretty much concerned with doing their best. Maybe try to space out the difficult course? I wouldn’t really try to take math, science, and foreign language in the same semester for instance unless I was fairly confident in my math skills.
Summer courses helped me with my workload. I took them while I was at both a community college and a university and I was able to reduce the amount of classes I had to take during the regular semesters. I wouldn’t say there was a huge gap in difficulty between the CC and university summer courses, in part because you’ll likely be more prepared for the university classes after you graduate from CC.
I found the fast rate of summer courses to be easier because there was less of a risk of forgetting information. The pace kept my mind on track.
Still debating. I’m worried that I’ll fail again because it’s fast paced. It’s an art class (Architecture of the World)
Prepare to take one summer class each session but you really need to go to the academic counseling/tutoring center to find out why you are having such a difficult time.
Well in the summer you only focus on one class. If you work during the summer then it will be hard to manage time.
A professor I had during a summer semester said that students did better when the classes were faster paced. He attributed that to the students having less time to forget the information they learned.
