I have a 2180 on my SAT, with 670 CR, 760 Math, and 750 Writing. I am applying early decision and my counselor is afraid that the critical reading score is too low. I can get consistently 31s on the ACT practice tests, which, after converting online, is equal to a 2040…

If I take the ACT, I would have to send the score directly to the schools whatever score I get right? I fear that if I get too low, it will hurt my chances.

Would a 31 on the ACT be better than a 2180 on the SAT?

Your 2180 SAT is better than a 31 ACT score. If your SAT CR score is within the 25 - 75 percentile range for the ED school, I’d go with the SAT score. I doubt that one score will keep you out of the school. At the most selective schools, once your grades and scores are in the right range, it’s the things like EC’s and essays that make the difference.

I’ve seen kids get into top schools ED with scores like yours when they had other things to make them stand out. Good luck.
