should I take the SAT a third time?

I plan on applying to selective colleges like Barnard, and Bryn Mawr. My GPA is OK. It’s a 3.74

First time SAT: 1990
CR: 560
MATH: 650
WRITING: 780 (ESSAY 11)

2ND TIME SAT: 2120
CR: 630
MATH: 750
WRITING: 740

SUPERSCORED: 2160

I’ve improved each time I have taken the SAT so im debatingtaking it again to raise my CR to a 700+. As I’ve said before, I want to get into very selective schools and I wnt to maximize my chances of getting in. Is it worth taking the SAT a third time?

Critical Reading is usually the hardest section to raise. If you are willing to put the time in to practicing everyday, then I’d say take it in October. Only if you’re done with Subject Test requirements though. If you have to take Subject Tests in the fall, I’d say you’re done with the SAT.

You can raise your Critical Reading score, but you’ll have to do a lot of practice. Don’t beat yourself up when you get a question wrong; just relax and see if you can figure out why the correct one is correct and why the wrong one distracted you.

This coming year, though, I’d focus on keeping your GPA at least as high as it is (if you get straight A’s you’ll raise it to around a 3.8); at the most selective colleges in the U.S., many applicants have 4.0s. As unfair as I think it is (because high school teachers vary widely in their grading and class difficulty, both within and among high schools), SAT performance is often viewed as secondary to GPA.
