Should I tell the college that accepted me that I'm on another waitlist?

I have deposited to college A, but I also have a waitlist offer from college B. Obviously I won’t tell college B anything. But should I inform college A about my waitlist? Or should I only wait until if college B accepts me from the waitlist, and when I need to tell college A that I won’t be going?

Once you are offered a spot off the waitlist and decide to take it (by paying the deposit), you should immediately tell the college you committed to initially that you won’t be attending.

There is zero reason to let college A know you are on another school’s waitlist. As of now you have deposited and plan attend college A and that is all they need to know.

The odds of getting off most waitlists is low. Set your mind to the fact that you will be attending college A and get excited about that option.

FWIW college B will assume you have deposited at a college where you have been accepted.

IF and only IF you get off the waitlist at college B AND college B is affordable THEN you notify college A (in writing is best) that you will not be attending and deposit at college B. You should expect to lose the deposit at college A

This is not an unusual occurance and colleges are prepared to handle this type of movement.

If you get off a WL and choose that school, then you’ll withdrawal.

Right now you are committed to the school you deposited.

Nothing to say.

If you do get off the wait-list and withdraw, make sure that your notice to withdraw reaches housing & meal plan as well. (Tends to be a factor at large public universities more than small private schools.)

No. Colleges put thousands onto wait list for as few as 20 spots expected. In many cases, it is a soft rejection.

No need to inform college where you deposited, that youre on a wait list.
