should i throw away my chances at Berkeley Haas to increase my chances at UCLA?

I want to get into UCLA. I will apply as Biz Econ for my first major this Fall and I will be TAP certified so I can also pick an alternate major. My current GPA is 4.00 but I can’t guarantee it will stay 4.0 for the remaining 2 semesters I have at CC.

I was gonna take Intro Business next semester (Last semester @ CC) because if I finish that I’ll have all the pre-reqs done for Haas, but I was just thinking that I could possibly increase my chances of being accepted to UCLA if I complete more pre-reqs to the Math-Econ major instead of taking Business (but eliminating all chances of getting into Haas).

I’m a bit iffy about applying to Haas in the first place because work and internships is so important for Haas, but I have very little work and no internships.

If I apply to Math-Econ I will have completed Calculus I, II, Linear Algebra and the regular Econ pre-reqs prior to transfer. I will still be missing C++ programming, Calc III and Differential Equations. Is this enough to have a chance of acceptance in the Math-Econ major?

Maybe not… my friend only missed C++ and got in with a 3.56 this year, but honestly 3 pre-reqs may sound a little bit too much.

You should apply to Haas by taking the Intro to Business during winter session or online or whatever. Your GPA is solid so I don’t see any reason why not give it a try. Though they say work + internship + resume + PS= 50% on their website, I doubt these things’ impact would be THAT BIG compare to GPA and major pre-reqs :)

Oh, and you DEFINITELY CAN afford to let your GPA slip a little bit your last spring semester. They normally require you to have at least a B in some major pre-reqs and a C in GE in their “contract” and that’s it. Unless you really want a 4.0 coming out of CC, lol

I would just apply econ for UCB and biz-econ for UCLA. You will probably get into one with your 4.0 gpa.

Wow, you have seriously thought this through. My recommendation is not to focus on your Alt. major because odds are, you’re going to get into your primary major anyway. Take the business class and apply to Haas. I know people that have gotten in with relatively little work/internship experience. As sparky said, your GPA and prereqs are the most important.

In addition, you mentioned that you’ll be missing 3 prereqs for your alt. major at UCLA. That’s just not going to work at UCLA because they do care SO much about prereq completion. If I were you, I’d take that biz course and apply to Haas. Make sure to write great essays though on both the personal statements and the supplemental Haas essays.

Now the question becomes whether or not you should apply into Haas or Econ at Berkeley. Your work experience is shaky, and that makes me hesitate to tell you to apply to Haas, but honestly this issue is the same for everyone. i.e. to apply to Haas or to apply for Econ. I’ve known 4.0’s that didn’t apply to Haas because they were afraid of rejection, and I know 3.7’s that got into Haas (trust me, there’s plenty), and thought they were going to a different UC already. Imo, if you get rejected from Haas, it’s no big because you’re a shoe-in at UCLA with ur prereqs done for biz econ. I mean that.

Ultimately, it is up to you, and it’s a real question to consider. In my honest opinion, I’d apply to Haas.

I would say Haas, simple because 3 pre-reqs is a bit much, even missing one or two is iffy but missing 3 means an entire extra quarter and with the UC budget the way it is, they want people in and out with in 12 quarters of schooling. You having to go over 12 doesn’t bode well for you. Also, you have a perfect 4.0 and will have pre-reqs satisfied, as cut throat as Haas is, I’d still say your chances are better there.
