I am a sophomore at small, private, Christian university in southern California, Vanguard University. It is not very prestigious and there are not too many extracurricular activities except for missions trips and a science club which i am both a part of. I am also a CCE at the hospital and i work at CK. And i am applying to a study abroad program at Cambridge this summer.

I am wondering if i should transfer to a different school while i still can to have a better chance of getting into a better medical school?

and also if there are any other EC’s anyone can suggest?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated:)

If you like how things are going, I wouldn’t transfer just because you think somewhere else will give you better chances. As for EC’s nobody on here can really tell what your interests are so I don’t think anyone can give you exact suggestions. Join any clubs you’re interested in (science-related or not) and if you can’t find one you like you could always try to start your own, which also “looks good” if you keep a leadership position.

How many people applied to medical school from Vanguard last year? How many got in? Those are the two questions you need an answer to before deciding whether you should transfer. Sometimes a small school can be great, because your letters of rec will be really personal. Other times you suffer because of limited research and clinical opportunities. I am planning of doing CCE in Long Beach starting next Fall. I heard at a talk on campus by some dude who works at UCI med school and teacher for a small MCAT prep company that being a CCE really helps. If they’re right, then research might be the only thing you’re sacrificing in exchange for much more personal letters.
