Im a high school student taking college classes along with AP to be more competitive to college. So basically I wanted to drop this class but my mom told me not to so now I’ll get a W if I drop it. My professor grades extremely hard and he just automatically slaps on an 80 if your opinion doesn’t agree with his (philosophy). His average rate my professor is extremely low as well. I attached an assignment and submitted it before the due date but I received a zero for it as it didn’t work for some reason. I emailed him time stamps showing that everything was completed on time but he literally doesn’t answer his emails or anything. I don’t want my college gpa to drop but I also don’t want a W on my transcript unless there is some way to talk to my advisor to avoid this or something. I literally do not know what to do or how to tell my mom any of this. Right now my grades like a 50 and regularly it’s around a 84-86. I literally do not know what to do. Would a W or less than a 4.0 look bad to schools like Barnard and Northwestern? Please help and thanks in advance.
Is better to get a W, than to fail the class. Withdraw and focus on your other courses!
Im taking one other college class that I think I can get an A in. I don’t know if he’s going to fix it. I think I’ll base my withdrawal on whether or not he does fix it and what my grade is. I wish I went with my gut rather than being a pushover.
I would try talking with the department chair at the college about the professor’s refusal to acknowledge and address that you were given a zero even the assignment was submitted on time. Are you saying that if the professor would grade your allegedly-non-submitted assignment earnestly, then you would not need to drop the class? Also seek advice from your high school counselor or co-ordinator for dual enrollment.
Yeah if he gives me a decent grade (that isn’t the copy paste 80) i wouldn’t drop as that would be 30% of my grade. Literally scrolling on the rate my professors everyone has the same feedback so ik im not going crazy. First mistake was not looking at that closely. I’m going to give him till Monday to respond. If not, then yeah. I’m also slightly suspecting it’s because I referred to him as professor and not doctor in the email
Your grades are unlikely to be hurt by doing that. In the US a professor is most often someone with a PhD that teaches. The title is generally considering more honorific than doctor since becoming one usually takes additional years.
I wonder if he might be more conducive to your ‘plea’ in person, rather than email ? I would not expect him to respond over the weekend.
It’s an online course.
Oh okay, was concerned because I realized he refers to himself like that
Email the department chair now. Explain the situation. Don’t be defensive and let him know if nothing can be done you will have to take the W.
Does taking a college philosophy class during HS make one more competitive? From everything I have seen this is not true. This is not DE, correct? Do you have to submit the college transcript at all?
Most colleges are very clear that you are required to submit transcripts for all college courses you have taken when you apply to college for your bachelors.
In addition, these classes become part of your college record, so you generally will also need to submit them if you apply to grad school/med school/law school, etc later.
Seems like not taking them to begin with is a better choice.
Taking college courses can be OK. But students shouldn’t feel like they must do so, and I get the sense sometime that they or their parents feel this is necessary.
RE: the OP…a few things.
-
Contact the department chair person with your concerns about communication with the instructor.
-
You need to be very sure why your grade was as it was.
-
Rate My Professors typically has reviews when students are NOT happy with an instructor. I’m not sure I have ever read a review there from a happy student who got a great grade and loved the professor. Just FYI from my point of view.
Yes, you shouldn’t take them if you’re not confident that you can do the work and get a good grade. And if you quickly realize you’re in over your head, then you should drop ASAP. Unfortunately, too late for the OP to do that, so they will need to figure out a different plan - either getting their grade up or just taking taking the W. A W is far better than an F.
Agree!
My D took a W in a non core AP class. Her CC report included a one liner explanation.
Okay, so I shouldn’t wait?
It’s sort of like dual enrollment: my schools weird and this is the closest it offers. My mom wants me to do something like that in college so she said it would be.
