So, I am taking a Pre-Calculus class and struggling a lot in that class. There’s a total of 4 exams, 8 quizzes, and final. I failed two exams and did horrible on most of the quizzes. There’s one exam and final left. I have a 65% in the class and there’s 4 weeks left. The last day to withdraw is this Sunday. This math class (Math 129) is part of the Golden 4 for CSU transfers. I really don’t know what I should do. Should I stay in the class and try my best to pass it or just withdraw and retake it next semester? I also will need to wait a year later to apply for transfer. Which will screwed up my whole plan. I applied 3 CSU’s last month and obviously if I don’t complete the GOLDEN 4 by next spring, I will be automatically be rejected. Help!
Why are you failing and doing horribly? Are you doing all of the homework? Are you getting help at your campus tutoring center? Have you been to the instructor’s office hours?
If you haven’t done those things, but you can pull yourself together and do those, then there is a chance you could pass the course.
If you’ve done all that, and you know now that you are missing basic concepts that you can’t master before the next set of quizzes and exams, then withdrawing many make good sense.
@happymomof1 Yes, I have been doing all of my homework and did the study guide for every exam. I still did poorly on the quizzes and exams. I did go get help from the tutoring center at least twice every week since school started. The only exam I did well on was the first one because the concepts were easy in the beginning. I’m just a poor test taker. I get test anxiety. I also haven’t taken any math classes the last 5 years so it makes it hard for me to grasp the concepts. I took Intermediate Algebra/Geometry back in 2009…
It looks like you need to drop this class and delay your transfer. That way you will have more time to get caught up in math. You could take a lower-level math class in the spring, and then try pre-calculus again next summer or fall.
You also would be able to take advantage of the CC’s resources to master better test-taking skills, and techniques that can reduce your test anxiety. You want to set yourself up to succeed when you transfer to the 4-year university.
