Should I write my college essay on graffiti?

I am trying to make an important decision of whether I should write my essay on writing graff. I was introduced to graffiti and “hip hop culture” when I was a freshman, and wrote extensively at my town and school as a sophomore, junior, and currently. Although this aspect of me would make me very unique, I am afraid if it would make me seem like the “wrong person”, or a “criminal.” Do y’all think that this would be a good idea? If so, do what are some tips and advice that I could use?

I am applying to Cornell, Duke, and Chicago.

What do you use your graffiti for? Where do you do it?

If it’s not criminal, and if it’s a hobby of yours, then why couldn’t you write about it? Heck, I’d even say that if you use your graffiti to satisfy your creative spirit and to connect to the world around you, you could even tailor your topic to challenge the notion that graffiti is destructive.

Were you doing anything you could have been arrested for? Then no. Otherwise fine.

Yeah of course I did “illegal” Graff, or else it would’t be considered graffiti. I’m thinking about focusing on the artistic and cultural aspects though.

I actually think it’s pretty cool, but I would tone down on the illegal aspects if possible (you don’t want to give the wrong impression). Maybe you could write about the reasons why you got into graffiti or what you wrote. In any case, it would definitely make for an interesting essay, especially if you’re applying to a more artistically inclined program.

Maybe write about your “last” graffiti, the one after which you’ve decided not to do again? or it’s so compelling you’ve been trying to stop, but couldn’t?

I’m all for taking risks, but I think this is a little too risky.

If graffiti is something you can’t imagine your profile to be complete without, perhaps write about your passion for the style? Not necessarily that you create graffiti, because that seems a bit too risky, but your fascination for the culture behind it and your studies on it.
