I am currently a freshman at a competitive public high school. Are there any advantages to applying a competitive private school such as Exeter (probably the only one I would seriously consider)?

Yes, there are many advantages. You get the benefits of a boarder.- diversity, independence, prep for college, etc
But, if your school is already challenging, why change? It may be more difficult, but I’m just giving opinions. it may depend on why you would want to switch schools.

Well, my reasons for possible switching are: meeting new and different people, possibly having a more difficult course load, and knowing more people going to the same college as me (my school sends only about 17 people every year to Harvard).

If you’re on the level, you should stay at your school.

It sounds like you school offers you the appropriate challenge, it must be a pretty solid school to send so many to Harvard. I would suggest staying put and doing the best you can at your current school – while thinking outside the box a bit. Summer programs are an excellent way to meeting new and different people. Don’t worry about not knowing many people when you go to college – that is the case for most people. Even if you attend a school with friends, you may be in a different dorm, different classes, etc.

Consider a study abroad program, community college or university class, online class, etc to add some variety to your current school. Look outside the school community for ways to involve yourself.

It’s just that my school seems to send many people to academia, where they are successful. Whereas I think I would enjoy the atmosphere in business much more, this is where prep schools seem to send people.

you are not going to want to go to college with more than 17 people from your high school. you probably will freak out if ONE person from your high school goes to the same school as you. and you will try so hard to avoid them.
