should my friend take SAT or ACT?

I’ve asked this before, but I need more input.

I have a friend who is a senior. I am helping ehr prepare for one or the other. her math skills are extremely rusty and I think I need to essentially teach her critical reading for the first time. we have a month to prepare. What test would you recommend? She plans on attending university of houston or UT San Antonio( not sure which test they prefer). I am currently using Princeton review to study and am thinking of using the SAT underground. Along, of course, with 10 Real SAT’s after we cover the basics. Right now I am aiming for a 1200 for her onthe SAT (don’t know about the ACT)

She already took the SAT and performed lower than average ( around 900 I think). If she took the ACT, would colleges care about her bad SAT score?

Any other suggestions? For Math, I figure I will just go thorugh the review book. For verbal I figure i would do some analogies and sentence completions with her. I think I will also work with her on the critical reading section (try to improve her reading and logic skills). I am also going to make her read half of the Poisonwood Bible( good book, but not strong on vocab) and then lean her toward more intensive reading (like frankenstein). I am plan on using www.number2.com for at leas tthe vocab builder ( have not looked at the SAT and ACT prep)

so I had a lot of questions. Basically:

1) should she take ACT or SAT
2) What is the best way to prep her for the test ( I only have a month)

bumpity bump

You cannot teach critical reading in a month. It is a skill that is learned through years of high school. However, math, especially SAT math, is easy to teach in a short time. Teach her the plug-in technique!!! Tell her to focus on easy/medium questions also.

Sorry but I am clueless about ACT. If she is awesome in science, i think you should go for it. If not, then i don’t think ACT will be better than SAT.

hmm … first, I’d check the schools to see which test they prefer … many moons ago the ACT was more prevelant in the midwest (and west?) while the SAT was the first choice on the east coast. The schools she is considering may only take one of the tests.

The desscription of the difference I have often heard is that the ACT is more of a test of acquired knowledge while the SAT is more like a IQ test than the ACT. So hard working students who worked their way to good grades often do better on the ACT while the SATs may work better for more “natural” students.
