So in May this year I took the SAT for the first time and unfortunately I got a 1250. I was devastated by this score and I really have made the effort this summer to achieve success on the SAT. Although there is a test date in October, I feel like its not enough time for me to get the score I desire (1700-1900). I would like to attend Suffolk University but I feel like my SAT score and money are preventing my chances from attending.
My grades are good and I have a success story. I went from the freshmen bum smoking pot and getting 2.2’s on my GPA to getting 3.75’s (Junior Year Quarter averages). I am also taking AP English and World History Honors for Senior year. I know some of you on this website are potential Harvard and Ivy League attendants and may think this is a joke but for me this is a huge milestone.
So long story short, I want to take the test 3 more times but my parents want to do Early action to get some financial aid.
But in order to take the test three times I realized I might have to sacrifice early action and send my applications out in January.
Is this a wise thing to do? I want my SAT score to show my growth I’ve had as a student when colleges look.
In terms of the books im using, I have 3 collegeboard books for tests, Im buying direct hits V1 and V2 today, I have “SAT 2400 in 7 steps” and Barrons 2400 and Barrons writing workbook. Ive been studying everyday since June.
My score is roughly around a 1400 right now. Im hoping to get in the high 1500’s or 1600 by October and get a 1800 or 1900 in December.
Is this a smart decision? Any advice is appreciated
Yes. Look at your school’s testing deadlines to see when the last possible test date for your application plan is. You can’t get into any decently selective school with a 1250; grades aren’t great, but at least you have a story? One test can’t make up for four years of work. However, just a warning: if you increase that much (+650 or so), the ETS will most likely delay your score because they will suspect you of cheating.
Quit player hating. Those trash grades were only from my freshmen year. Im going to take the SAT 3 more times and Suffolk has a 84 percent acceptance rate and a 2.7 minimum GPA requirement. All I gotta do is get my SAT score up.
What’s the advantage of taking the SAT three more times vs taking it once more after months of studying? If you need to check your progress, use the Blue Book or past tests. If there is a financial barrier and you have SAT fee waivers, then you could consider multiple tests.
If you can increase your SAT to your target score, then you are likely to get into Suffolk, but I can’t speak on the financial/merit aid.
@ovokai I liked how I answered your question, gave you a quick reality check, and then you accuse me of “player hating”. Am I not telling the truth? I never said all your grades were horrible, I just meant your cumulative GPA (again, as you said, due to your freshman year) is somewhat low. The whole thing with the ETS is true as well, it’s happened to several people. You came on here for advice. I told you, yes, retake your test because your score isn’t good. I looked at the CDS for Suffolk already, and I agree that you have a good shot (nothing is guaranteed) at the school if you get your scores up. So don’t accuse me of “player hating”, whatever that means.
Lol your so sensitive I was just joking about player hating. Its a slang term and I didn’t expect someone to take it that seriously. First and foremost thanks for taking time to answer, and I will take the test a couple times this fall. Ive heard of people significantly boosting there SAT score and the college board accuses them of cheating, does this happen frequently.
