Should UW build more dorm space?

According to a local story today the UWis considering a new dorm building. Should the UW add inventory or just rely on the private sector building apartments near campus?

That’s up to them but many public schools are building public/private dorms, backed by municipal bonds for initial funding.

Yes, they need more dorms!

UW is super popular in my circle and parents reported the housing crunch was one of the most stressful parts of their kids’ first year experience. Within a month of arriving on campus, students were needing to look for off campus housing for sophomore year. Rents are high and apartments limited. I think it would be much less stressful if there was dorm housing for sophomores who wanted to stay in the dorms (and coordinate that with when leases need to be signed).

Apparently new dorms are in play. The local major private landlords have indicated opposition. Governor’s budget plan includes Humanities demolition, expansion of campus housing capacity – UW–Madison News
